The Creative Curriculum Lead will be responsible for designing curriculum content and training for teachers in the YMCA’s Freedom Schools program in Summer 2023, and for supporting fidelity to curriculum during the program sessions.
Freedom Schools were grassroots, multidisciplinary educational programs, started in the 1960s by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and designed to facilitate disenfranchised African Americans to be politically and socially engaged citizens. In the legacy of historical Freedom Schools, YMCA of Metro Chicago will be implementing summer learning programs for youth entering 6-8th grade, during two three-week summer sessions. Youth will engage with project-based learning, anchored by multi-modal social studies activities, embedded literacy assessments and support, and relevant weekly field trips. Additionally, youth will participate in complementary recreational activities, and there will be components of family and community engagement.
This role will be part-time during Spring and Summer 2023. You will meet with the Program Director weekly for check-ins.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Designing a six-week curriculum that meets all grant requirements
- Co-leading curriculum training during the week prior to programming
- Developing Family Engagement event at the end of each 3 week session.
- Ensuring fidelity to curriculum during programming (observations and coaching)
- Candidates for this role must have knowledge of Social Studies and Literacy education in middle grades, be practitioners of culturally responsive pedagogy and social justice education, and be familiar with the arts and cultural landscape of Chicago.
Minimum and Preferred Requirements Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor's Degree in Education preferred but not required.
- Demonstrate experience with curriculum development, teaching experience and development of Middle school-aged enrichment programs.
- Knowledge of DEI implementation in curriculum.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
- Previous experience in direct service with diverse and low-income families.
