Department Summary
The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) is a department of the Division of Student Life. The EMU is a multifaceted auxiliary service that employs over 90 professional staff and 400 student staff, and serves over 15 thousand daily users during the academic year. The EMU welcomes students, faculty, staff, the community, and visitors to campus, and its mission is to provide learning experiences and opportunities for personal growth in an open, inclusive, and resource-rich community where students and staff collaborate to inspire and sustain extraordinary programs and services that promote diversity and social interaction. The EMU is student-centered and is operated in collaboration with a student Board, who are actively involved in determining the character and scope of the department and approve the budget recommendations of all EMU services and programs.
Position Summary
The Custodian position is responsible for maintaining clean, safe and sanitary conditions in and around the Erb Memorial Union (EMU). Duties include sanitation of restrooms; floor and window care; cleaning of the building, dining areas, and all surrounding grounds; emptying garbage, compost, and recycling; assisting with general maintenance of the facility, and providing excellent customer service to all EMU staff and visitors.
The Custodian will demonstrate and promote effective and respectful communication with staff, management, building users, and other campus departments. The person in this position will exhibit appropriate behavior in the workplace, creating a respectful work environment. This position reports to the Custodial Services Manager.
Work Conditions and Physical Demands
Physical demands include overhead work on ladders, heavy lifting (50+ lbs), stair climbing, bending, stretching, reaching, squatting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, extensive walking on hard smooth finishes as well as uneven surfaces and prolonged periods of exertion. Work conditions may be in freezers, coolers, service tunnels, basement spaces, noisy areas, inclement weather, and dimly lit spaces. Work may require clean-up of bodily fluids.
Essential Personnel
Weather/nature conditions change rapidly in the Pacific Northwest. As a result, there are certain personnel who are considered required at all times to maintain the continuity of critical operations and business during and after a disaster or natural event. This position is one of those required positions necessitating that the employee make every reasonable effort to arrive at campus at their regularly scheduled times unless otherwise notified by their supervisor. Essential personnel must provide reliable and current contact information at all times.
This position will work a schedule of Sunday-Thursday 8:00p-4:30a.
Minimum Requirements
- At least one year of custodial experience.
- Basic knowledge of commercial cleaning equipment and chemicals.

- Experience with commercial cleaning equipment and industrial chemicals.
