What does a Customer Service Specialist do?
This role contributes to the success of TOTE Maritime Alaska as an integral part of the team in providing superior customer service by building customer relationships, monitoring, and accommodating customer needs, creating, and managing bookings, providing problem resolution, producing reports, tracking cargo, and coordinating equipment.
Main Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Create and update and assign bookings, bills of lading and transport bookings to designated vessel.
- Answer customer questions regarding vessel sailing or other operational requirements. Research and resolve customer issues and questions.
- Track cargo and provide updates to customers, vendors, or other departments. Inform customers of applicable policies, schedule updates and regulations related to shipment.
- Arrange logistics spots, trans-loads, deliveries, and pickups.
- Review and correct all Web and EDI bookings.
- Build and develop customer and vendor relationships through open and interactive communication.
- Run and audit various reports for customers and internal use.
- Build positive, joint relationships with internal employees and departments.
- Perform accurate and efficient data entry.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Associate degree required (this requirement may be waived with at least three years comparable experience in the transportation industry).
- Three to four years of customer service or billing experience with good math skills. Experience in transportation a plus.
- Excellent verbal, written, organizational and communication skills.
- Must be a teammate and provide support to the department.
- Ability to anticipate and understand customer needs.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize with little supervision.
- Computer literate, with the ability to use standard software applications and be proficient in Windows and MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and E-service center & E-commerce web-based applications.

The salary range is $38,300 – $67,100 with an anticipated hiring range $42,000 - $50,000. Pay will be based on several factors including the candidate’s education, work experience, work location and specific job duties.
As part of the team, full-time employees will receive a comprehensive benefits package, which includes health, dental, vision, life insurance, short term disability, long term disability, employee assistance program, 401(k) with company match and discretionary funding, tuition reimbursement, supplemental parental leave, jury duty and bereavement leave. Full-time employees will receive a minimum of 10 days vacation, 10 days sick, 10 days paid holidays and one floating holiday every 12 months. In addition, we offer an annual discretionary bonus (based on eligibility).
