Position: Data Management Resource Assistant
Duration: 12 Month Fellowship (52 weeks): Starting June 12, 2023 (dates may change based on orientation)
Location: USDA Pacific Southwest Regional Office, Vallejo, CA The duty station is negotiable within commuting distance of any Forest Service Office in California, with the opportunity for virtual work.
Fellowship Description:
The Data Manager Resource Assistant position will serve as the Region’s Recreation Data Manager. The incumbent plays a critical role in the management of the developed recreation site program by ensuring quality data is used in policy decisions, funding requests, and project management.
The RA may have the opportunity to collaborate with FS staff and to travel to various project sites in the course of their work. A valid driver’s license is required for this position, there is limited public transportation.
Fellows will work and communicate with a HAF Program Manager during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 3 blog posts highlighting their experience and development.

  • The incumbent should be a self-starter with experience in data management and analysis and the ability to communicate across program areas and to all levels of the agency. The ideal candidate will work to meet the mission of Forest Service’s recreation program which is to support our internal and external partners in facilitating recreation experiences for the American public. Along with a positive attitude, the incumbent must be service-oriented, familiar with data processing, and be comfortable working in a virtual and collaborative environment.
Major Duties Include:
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for the Natural Resource Manager (NRM) Recreation Sites application, supporting both Regional Office and field users in all aspects of the application and the data contained within. Must be familiar with the National Asset Management Program (NAMP) approach and other NRM applications which are used to manage physical infrastructure and associated assets.
  • Gathers, compiles, and provides data for natural resources databases used as a basis for recommendations for management decisions and policy changes.
  • Monitors and reviews outputs for compliance with national policy, including government-wide directives, and directs maintenance of the database to accommodate changing agency needs.
  • Serves as Regional Data Steward and official contact for the region’s 18 National Forests. Provides training for Natural Resource Manager (NRM) Recreation Sites applications and cohesive information about data systems and management.
  • Provide expert recommendation, advice and training to Forest units and Regional Leadership to ensure that implementation of funds for program needs are consistent with policy and procedure. Convene regularly with various WO, RO, Forest, and District Recreation and Engineering staffs to discuss issues, brainstorm solutions, and pursue achievable courses of action.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ages 17 and up
  • Available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for 52 weeks/1 year
    • Starting June 2023
  • Driver’s license required
    • RA may be required to drive a government vehicle
  • Recent grads, or young professionals
    • Bachelors or Masters degrees and recent grads with proven strong data management skills, planning and project management experience preferred.
  • US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.
  • Participation in US Forest Service Orientation Training scheduled for June 2023 in Denver, CO. Travel arrangements covered.

Stipend + Benefits.
  • $750 weekly pay stipend based on a 40-hour workweek*
  • $1000 monthly housing stipend
  • $50 monthly commuting stipend
  • Optional health care benefit provided by the RAP partner at no cost to the resource assistant
  • Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals
  • Paid Federal holidays and 40 hours of leave
  • 80 hours of PTO for a 12 month internship
  • Direct Hiring Authority Eligibility – after completing a minimum of 960 hours (excluding orientation week), DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.
