Job Summary
CU Boulder encourages applications for the Residential Program Graduate Advisor position with Data Science! This role serves as the advisor for residential master’s students, and is responsible for proactive outreach and communication to these students. The Graduate Program Advisor informs and advises students of their degree milestones and tracks their progress towards fulfilling them; advises students about the nature and content of the program’s curricula; helps prepare students to take advantage of professional development and community-building opportunities.
The Data Science Program (DS) is committed to developing collaborative, student-centered relationships between graduate program advisors and graduate students that support achievement of academic success, promote personal and professional development of students, and foster a sense of community for our graduate students. The DS advisors support students through a developmental, student-focused approach. With oversight and guidance from the Graduate Program Manager – Residential Programs, this position is charged with developing and implementing advising strategies and interventions to enhance the performance and persistence of students and support the graduate education mission of the DS program in a scalable way.

Data Science is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on the fields of statistics, applied mathematics, data science, computer science, information science, geospatial analytics, natural language processing, business analytics and more. Our curriculum leverages CU Boulder faculty expertise to offer technical depth and functional breadth while emphasizing cross-functional communication and teamwork—skills vital to data scientists, who increasingly work with stakeholders across a wide spectrum of domains.
CU Boulder data science students choose from multiple modalities, including a traditional on-campus degree and our innovative MS-DS on Coursera. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Academic Advising/Student Support
- Perform academic advising for residential students within the program, consistent with current advising standards and protocols.
- Track student progress by maintaining student records.
- Maintain and update degree plans, advise students regarding academic requirements and options for completing them, stay current regarding changing curriculum. Use degree audit system as appropriate.
- Review and process student requests and ensure students receive communication and responses in a timely manner.
- Help students with course registration issues as needed, including requests for late registration/changes or leave of absence.
- Serve as residential student liaison with the DS staff and faculty, presenting student petitions, as needed.
- Assist students with visa issues and approvals for CPT and OPT.
- Serve as first point of contact for current students with questions or concerns.
- Assist students with problem-solving and campus resources. Advance appeals or grievances to Graduate Program Manager-Residential Programs as appropriate.
- Create documents/systems that can support a large group of students to scale.
Recruitment, Admissions, and Communication
- Ensure information on the program’s graduate program website is accurate, compelling, and up-to-date. Keep recruitment materials up to date.
- Serve as the main point of contact in recruitment meetings and collaborate on ways to reach a more diverse audience, including attending recruitment events.
- Manage admissions and degree conferral processes, send admissions decisions and process degree conferrals at the end of every session.
- Conduct visual compliance reports and generate mandated reports as needed.
- Assist with webinars and other recruitment efforts.
- Advocate for student services and notify students of upcoming opportunities, specifically creating a community within the student population.
- Assist in planning student events, including orientation, hackathons, and graduation recognition ceremonies.
- Collaborate with departments on campus.
- Implement the mentor/mentee program to pair admitted residential students with mentors.
Data Analysis and Reporting
- Collect and analyze data on residential applicants, admitted students and current students.
- Produce visualizations and reports on residential student populations.
Other Departmental Responsibilities
- Support the Data Science Program with their events, talks, diversity and inclusion efforts and other projects as needed.
- Design and coordinate student-focused events to promote a sense of community and increase retention rates among current residential graduate students.
- Help the program with other projects, where and when needed.

- The position requires ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary to provide support to students.
What We Can Offer
The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $66,500 annually.

What We Require
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- One year of experience with program administration, student services, counseling or other relevant experience (i.e., advising, marketing/communications, admissions, etc.).
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

- Ability to work in an environment which may demand some flexibility or evening/weekend work.
