), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Library Experience and Access department (LEAD) manages highly visible public services units and spaces on the main floor of the Valley Library on Oregon State University’s main campus in Corvallis, Oregon. LEAD employees provide expertise and labor to support public services in two branch libraries: the Guin Library at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon, and the Tykeson Library on the OSU-Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. The Library Experience and Access Department includes thirteen full-time employees and approximately 50 student workers. The LEAD Head is the direct supervisor for the department’s faculty employees and unit supervisors. Primary duties include: developing the departmental budget and stewarding the department’s resources; working with the unit to set goals and manage workloads; ensuring that work is regularly assessed and documented. The LEAD head also serves as a member of the Library Administration, Management and Planning team (LAMP). LAMP is a highly collaborative body, committed to transparency in decision-making. As a member of LAMP the LEAD head participates in library-wide decisions about budget development, resource allocation, staffing and strategic direction.

Position Duties
60% Management
- Builds, models and supports a workplace culture that is collaborative, sustainable and transparent.
- Serves as the direct supervisor for faculty in the Library Experience and Access Department. Supervision includes: hiring, onboarding, mentoring, coaching, delivering feedback and evaluating performance. Provides mentoring and support to LEAD supervisors.
- Gathers and uses input from diverse sources to inform decisions, check assumptions, and reflect and improve on practice. Documents decisions and their impact in annual assessment reports.
- Leads the department in collecting and analyzing usage and other data relevant to the assessment and evaluation of library public services. Documents the results of this analysis in annual assessment reports. Ensures that user data is managed appropriately according to OSULP privacy policies and records retention schedules.
- Facilitates strong communication between LEAD and other OSULP units, campus partners, and other stakeholders. Fosters a culture of transparency and healthy inter-departmental communication within OSULP.
- Builds and advances equity and inclusion in library public services, spaces, staffing and policies. Supports diversity equity and inclusion initiatives within OSULP.
- Oversees the LEAD budget, and with the Dean of Libraries and Associate Dean, engages in budget planning, preparation and stewardship.
- Supported by the Dean of the Libraries, serves as an on-the-ground resource and decision maker when challenging and complex situations arise with patrons throughout the entire Valley Library building.
25% Administration
- Develops and fosters campus partnerships that advance LEAD and OSULP strategic goals.
- Participates actively as a member of the Library Administration, Management and Planning team (LAMP). Ensures that LEAD input and perspectives are included in LAMP discussions. Participates in collaborative budgeting, planning and prioritization activities to advance library-wide goals.
- Provides leadership and expertise to OSULP initiatives focusing on library public services.
- Works with LEAD staff, and with LAMP to develop, review and revise library policies as needed.
15% Service and Professional Engagement
- OSU faculty advance the shared governance of the university by serving, where appropriate, on library and university committees, task forces and work groups.
- Participates in local, state, national and/or international professional or scholarly societies and associations.
- Represents OSULP in library consortia and in cross-library partnerships.
- Keeps abreast of and participates in ongoing professional conversations and an active member of relevant communities of practice.
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field to position
Experience. Provide concrete examples that demonstrate you have:
- At least 3 years of professional experience in library public services.
- Experience with the design and delivery of library public services.
- At least 1 year of experience with supervision of full-time employees, including: hiring, training, scheduling, onboarding, performance evaluation and coaching. This experience may include, but should not be limited to, supervision of student workers and volunteers.
- Experience with successful project or service management, including: managing budgets, setting priorities, facilitating communication, creating documentation and conducting assessment.
- Experience building and fostering collaborative relationships that advance library goals.

- Ability to manage change within organizations, which may include the ability to: be flexible, manage emotions, set priorities, tolerate uncertainty and resolve competing demands, while keeping track of larger departmental and library goals.

- MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution or international equivalent
- Professional experience successfully managing projects or services in a higher education environment
- Demonstrated experience supervising, mentoring and coaching supervisors.
- Professional experience developing or delivering both circulation and reference services.
- Bilingual in Spanish/English
The LEAD Head will primarily work regular weekday business hours in the LEAD department and in the public services spaces throughout the Valley Library. Specific start and end times can be negotiated with the supervisor. Occasional evening and/or weekend hours may be required for event hosting and preparation, or to respond to emergency situations. The LEAD Head may occasionally work away from the primary work site, and there is a possibility of scheduled remote work or adjustments to the regular schedule. These will be negotiated with the supervisor, and documented using OSU’s Flexible Work Agreement. Flexible work agreements are subject to periodic reviews by the Dean of Libraries, and can be terminated with 3 days’ notice if the business need of the unit requires it. Some travel can be expected, such as travel to branch library locations, conferences, off-campus meetings or donor visits.
