Deputy Comptroller

Job Summary
The City of Dearborn Heights is looking for an accountant to serve as Deputy Comptroller. Assists the
Comptroller in analyzing current and past budgets, preparing and justifying budget requests, managing and
tracking grants; supervising staff; and allocating funds according to spending priorities in a governmental
service agency. Tasks are completed with autonomy. The ideal candidate will have a passion for serving the
public, a positive attitude, sense of humor, great communication skills, and accounting practices acumen.

Compensation: Starting Salary $55,000 to $80,000 plus benefits after 90 days
This is a FULL-TIME salary exempt position and not eligible for overtime. The City offers a generous
benefit package; paid vacation, sick and holiday; short-term disability & life insurance; pension plan.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in accounting, finance, business management, or a related degree OR associate
degree with 10+ years of more progressive responsibilities, required;
  • Knowledge and experience with 2 to 3 years practical implementation of accounting principles
required; experience in the public or non-profit sector preferred;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • 5+ years of Supervisory experience;
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and meet the safe driving policy of the City;
  • Must be able to pass a civil service test and oral board exam (interview) with 70% or better;

pre-employment physical, including drug screen, and background check.

Duties & Responsibilities
The Deputy Comptroller is under the general supervision of the Comptroller and assists to develop &
implement organizational and department plans; develop financial system controls; develop annual budget;
assist with audit; grant management; oversee payroll, water billing, & claims; conduct fiscal analysis,
prepare cost projections, identify operational issues & formulate solutions; assist with staff supervision; acts
in the absence of the Comptroller.
