Summary:
The Deputy Politics Editor will help guide a fast-paced and productive regional politics desk. This position will work beside the Politics Editor to lead political news coverage for our website and print content. By placing a premium on sophisticated political reporting that is local, relevant, and impactful, the ideal candidate will be able to create a strong rapport with audiences online and in print. This position will also collaborate with all parts of the company to develop products that meet the audience's needs. Previous editing experience is mandatory. Strong personal skills are appreciated, and a background in local political journalism is a plus.
What You’ll Do
- Helps handle a heavy editing and workflow schedule, including working with reporters to develop story ideas, copy editing,
- Works with the politics reporters to maximize audience engagement and the impact on the community and our readers
- Contributes to a dynamic content strategy
- Communicates and collaborates across coverage teams and across the company
- Managing assigned coverage plans and projects from conception to completion, coordinating with stakeholders and
- With the Politics Editor, the Deputy Editor is responsible for performance management on the desk
- Makes sure the team connects with hub editors -- including homepage, audience and visuals teams -- for transparency
- Well versed in analytics tools and capable of using those tools to help guide reporters and coverage
- Strong management ability
- Advanced editing, coaching and collaborative skills
- Proficient in digital content management tools (e.g., WordPress)
- Reporting and research skills necessary to become a subject matter expert
- Strong writing skills, including use of alternative story forms and conversational voice
- Skills in brainstorming, planning and coordinating multimedia storytelling
