Role Summary

The Design Supervisor supervises designers in the preparation of 3D CAD data, working layouts and typical sections of simple to complex automotive components, assemblies and systems from engineering specifications, instructions and prior layouts. With minimal direction from management, assists in the implementation of design components and systems within operational, cost, timing, safety, reliability, quality, manufacturing feasibility parameters and in accordance to Exteriors and QSR (Exteriors operating system) located on the Exteriors and Web and in program folders. Exteriors operating system is compliant with IATF16949:2016.

Key Responsibilities

  • May manage design, CAD admin, and release resources per Magna Exteriors business objectives.
  • Interview, hire, and if necessary, terminate design staff.
  • Communicate and provide performance feedback to design staff on a regular basis.
  • Conduct performance reviews on annual basis (minimum).
  • Assign design resources to tasks appropriate to skill levels.
  • Coordinates with alternate Magna Exteriors Global E&D Centers to help manage workload and facilitate job assignments.
  • Lead the interpretation and application of design and engineering criteria on complete complex systems (i.e. specifications and background data) with minimal direction to ensure finished work meets internal and external quality standards.
  • May review and select design studies as required with engineering.
  • Provides guidance to associate designers, designers and senior designers with design studies.
  • Supervises in conjunction with engineers to coordinate design efforts for simple to complex components, assemblies and systems.
  • Leads the development of alternate solutions to design problems and guides associate designers, designers and engineers.
  • Leads initiatives for continuous product improvements and innovation objectives.
  • Provided guidance to associate designers and designers on design concepts.
  • Responsible for implementation of Customer Specific Requirement per OEM as required. Refer to quality per QSR handbook on the Magna Exteriors web.
  • Checks work to ensure compliance to engineering criteria and readiness for data transfer.
  • May lead design review meetings.
  • Establishes design program timing.
  • Keeps abreast of new and emerging products, processes and technologies.
  • Identifies and reports any problems relating to the product, process and quality system.
  • Assist in improving daily processes to ensure that the CAD systems meet customer requirements.
  • Proficient with OEM Design Release protocol.

Key Qualifications/Requirements

Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong working knowledge within a CAD software (i.e.UG/NX and/or Catia V5). Knowledgeable regarding all phases of drafting standards in major and minor layout, detailing and checking procedures. High level customer interfacing ability. Must possess strong communication skills (written and verbal).


Experience/Special Knowledge/Skills
- 10+ years of diversified design experience within automotive including 6+ years of CAD experience. Supervisory / Leader experience preferred. Previous management experience a plus.


Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Normal amount of sitting or standing, average mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer, may require local travel.
