Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) Teacher and Physical Education (PE) Co-Teacher, Grades 6-12

FTE: 1.0 FTE

Lakes International Language Academy (LILA) is an award-winning language immersion public charter school in Forest Lake, Minnesota. LILA prepares tomorrow’s critical thinkers and global citizens through language acquisition and inquiry-driven study. Convenient to both Minneapolis and Saint Paul, LILA is located close to the North Metro 35W-35E split.

Job Summary:

This position is at our upper school, grades 6 - 12. The job will be approximately 50% DAPE and 50% PE co-teaching.

The position will be in a co-taught setting within the Physical Education Class. The teacher for DAPE services will work closely with the PE teacher to integrate students who meet criteria for DAPE services into their PE class. This person will assess students for DAPE criteria; complete due process paperwork such as progress reports, data collection, and attend IEP meetings; and teach adaptive physical education to students with a wide range of developmental and physical disabilities.

The DAPE/PE co-teacher will collaborate with the Physical and Health Education teacher to design engaging lessons for Upper School students, as well as coordinating with other grade-level teachers, program specialists, special education coordinator, and other staff to create a more inclusive classroom. As a teacher in an IB school, the DAPE/PE Co-Teacher will strive to infuse internationally minded concepts into the curriculum on a continual basis; maintain knowledge of current and emerging trends, procedures and evaluation processes in physical and health education; participate in regular planning and staff development activities; participate in all training programs required for subject area, Developmental Designs, and the International Baccalaureate Programmes.

This position will work under the guidance of the Director of Special Education.

Essential Functions:

  • Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
  • Willing to split workload with co-teacher including planning, contacting home, correcting, and teaching.
  • Lead a specially designed physical education program for students with disabilities and/or a substantial delay or disorder in physical development.
  • Able to perceive and address individual and small group behavioral concerns.
  • Assess students' developmental, cognitive and social needs and provide developmentally appropriate instruction to meet those needs.
  • Help students discover their talents in physical achievement and understand the relationship of good body function and exercise.
  • Motivate pupils to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt physical education curriculum to the needs of each student, to the extent feasible.
  • Identify student’s needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Effectively manage caseload and maintain appropriate due process files.
  • Perform related work as apparent or assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university
  • A valid Minnesota teaching license in Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE), or proof of pending licensure

Preferences:

  • Experience working with students with significant disabilities is preferred.
  • International Baccalaureate experience helpful.
  • Language Immersion experience preferred.
  • Spanish or Mandarin Chinese language proficiency helpful, but not a must.

Work environment: Our upper school building, the Headwaters Campus, is approximately 2 miles from the lower school buildings in a growing part of Forest Lake, near the public library, the Sports Center and the YMCA. Opened in September 2014, the Headwaters Campus was custom built for LILA. Recently expanded, the Headwaters Campus features an all-new gymnasium. We have a plethora of technology and are acquiring a rich array of resources.

  • Travel: Teachers are provided opportunities to participate in training provided in the Twin Cities, across the U.S., and sometimes internationally in the areas of Language Immersion, International Baccalaureate, and Responsive Classroom or Developmental Designs. Occasional travel is required.
  • Work in a diverse culture: Many of our teachers were born in Mandarin and Spanish speaking countries. Nearly all have traveled extensively, with the large majority having lived in a Mandarin or Spanish speaking country for at least a semester.
  • Social functions: We usually start the school year with an overnight staff retreat in August, and have a January staff party with guests as well. Each Friday, various staff members offer well-attended gatherings around sports or exercise, including volleyball, football (soccer), kettlebells, or Zumba. Other social activities abound.
  • Professional Development: Lakes International provides professional development for new staff depending on needs and interest, but always including best practices of teachers in the International Baccalaureate programs and building a safe and inviting classroom climate for learning.
  • Career Track and Advancement: Many leadership positions are available to Lakes International teachers, depending on their interests, efforts, and expertise.
  • Grants to Teachers: The LILA Foundation frequently offers “Inquiry 360” grants to teachers to pursue enriching experiences that they can bring back to share in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to pursue these experiences abroad. Inquiry 360 grants are competitive and are awarded in April for use the following summer.

Physical Requirements: This position requires vocal communication, hearing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, use of hands to grasp and feel, and vision abilities including close, distance, and adjusting focus. Lifting/moving required frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds or more. Work occasionally requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and is generally in a moderately noisy location. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
