JOB TITLE: Associate Director of Accounting
REPORTS TO: Controller
EXPECTED SALARY RANGE: $75,000-95,000; plus, the UVM Foundation’s progressive benefits package, which includes: a comprehensive health plan; dental, vision, and life insurance; a robust paid time off package; a 403(b) plan with immediate vesting and contributions; and tuition remission.
EFFECTIVE DATE: June 1, 2023, or a negotiated date agreed upon by both parties
FTE: Full-Time
LOCATION: Burlington, Vermont
JOB-TYPE/HOURS: On-site. A limited hybrid arrangement may be possible, but frequent in-person presence will be required. This position will require occasional work outside of standard business days and hours.
JOB SUMMARY
The Associate Director of Accounting is responsible for managing key functions of the UVM Foundation business office, including but not limited to: managing, performing, and reporting the operating activities of the Foundation; preparing operating statements and balance sheet reconciliations; conducting financial analyses and maintaining the general ledger. Working with a team of colleagues, the person in this position also supports payroll, benefits, vendor disbursements, and expense reporting functions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
25% Payroll and benefit administration
- Pay Foundation employees accurately and on-time.
- Update employee records for hires, termination, changes, and benefits.
- Prepare payroll journal entries and management reports.
15% Vendor disbursements and expense reporting
- Process vendor payments and assign proper account coding.
- Update department managers on expense performance against budget.
30% Prepare balance sheet reconciliations, account analysis, and general journal entries. Assist with preparation of the monthly Operating Statement.
20% Audit and Tax Compliance
- Recommend, design, and implement process improvements that strengthen financial controls or improve efficiency.
- Audit – prepare supporting audit schedules and coordinate audit requests for information at the direction of the Controller.
- Federal and state tax returns - prepare supporting tax schedules and analysis at the direction of the Controller. Primary tax returns include Form 990, Form 990-T, and VT Form CO-411.
10% Special projects and other work as assigned
MINIMUM SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Critical thinking – ability to detect incorrect or abnormal information, identify the root cause, and recommend solutions.
- Attention to detail – review information for accuracy and identify mistakes or areas that need further review.
- Problem solving – ability to independently figure out solutions to routine business transactions.
- Effective interpersonal relationships – ability to build effective interpersonal relationships with Foundation staff, UVM staff, and our payroll system vendor.
- Deadline focus – ability to organize work in order to meet internal and external production deadlines.
- Good follow up skills – ability to independently follow up with staff to gather information and complete critical tasks.
- Work in a team environment – enjoy working with multiple people on projects and department activity.
- Strong technology aptitude – ability to quickly learn and apply technology solutions to routine business transactions. Advanced MS Excel skills including complex pivot tables, lookup functions, and working with large data sets.
- Professional curiosity, desire to learn, and desire to improve the Foundation’s operations.

PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Superior attention to detail, logical thinking, patience for detailed procedures.
- Skilled with fund accounting, non-profit accounting and investment accounting.
- Ability to interpret Foundation policy, FASB policy, and tax regulations to appropriately record and report transactions.
- Experience preparing IRS Form 990.
- Experience conducting or undergoing non-profit financial audits.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Experience with general ledger, accounting entries, accounts payable, and payroll. Equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable skill mastery has been achieved may be an alternative to a Bachelor’s degree.
PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Experience working in a higher education business office or similar non-profit. Desire to obtain Certified Public Accountant licensure. Ability to independently create complex spreadsheets using large data sets. Experience using Abila and/or PeopleSoft financial systems.
