Iowa MADE is a small-scale medical device manufacturing company within the University of Iowa seeking a Director of Operations with knowledge of people leadership, manufacturing methodologies, quality management systems, and proven processes to decrease the time to market. This role will be responsible for leading a team of student engineers and interacting with consultants to prioritize regulatory, manufacturing, quality and business strategy development for medical devices. The Director of Operations will collaborate with key stakeholders to define relevant strategies and with peers and team members on daily activities.


This role focuses on emerging medical technology to get early-stage medical devices on the market.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain a data-driven product/technology strategy.
  • Oversee processes related to manufacturing, quality, compliance, marketing and sales.
  • Create and oversee a project roadmap.
  • Tout the vision of the company.
  • Drive increased efficiency across the team. Lead efforts to improve processes and identification of new portfolio items.
  • Communicate effectively both within the immediate team and leadership ensuring the team receives consistent messages and has a clear understanding of business direction, strategy and results.
  • Keep current on all directly competitive products and changes in the market.
  • Set direction and own decisions; remove impediments.
  • Contribute to a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and open communication.
  • Lead and support students providing an environment for professional growth and development.
  • Support medical innovation space for emerging medical device development.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in medical device development, manufacturing or operations.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills including including work with entry level engineers.
  • Solid technical, communication and analytical skills with thorough understanding of medical device product development.
  • Proficient with production manufacturing technologies and methods (e.g., molding, CNC, forming etc.).
  • Experience with quality management systems.
  • Experience with leadership of manufacturing projects and teams through all phases of the product development life cycle.
  • Proven ability to scale applications with an engineering team.
  • Proven ability to provide leadership, technology guidance and mentorship to others throughout their domain.
  • Demonstrable success and experience with optimizing a manufacturing process to reduce cost or lead time.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to apply broad expertise or unique knowledge and professional concepts to develop resolutions to critical issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex, high visibility or high impact projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to shape and articulate a longer-term strategic view.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with design controls, verification/validation, process validation, sterilization and other processes to verify medical device production.
  • 3+ years of Project Management experience.
  • Early-stage medical device development and manufacturing.
  • Experience with project feasibility plans and pricing strategies.
  • Working knowledge of computer programs for project management, (e g. Microsoft Project or similar).
  • Experience working with Faculty and PhDs in academic environments.
  • Direct entrepreneur or startup experience.
