THE ROLE
The Public Relations Specialist II will work directly with some of the country's top universities to obtain media coverage that relates to their academic programs and wider brand. They will leverage faculty/student stories and utilize their expertise for media placements. This individual will have very strong writing and communication skills, and will stay on top of industry trends and developments to help tell the stories of our clients, many of whom are leaders of innovation and disruption of their respective fields. They will also have a high level understanding of SEO and provide support to the content and creative teams. Working within the wider communications team, they are ultimately responsible for ensuring that their clients are hitting monthly opportunity goals.
This is a full-time remote role, but we do have offices in Kansas City and San Diego for those that prefer an office environment. We also have growing teams in Los Angeles and Denver.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Land and facilitate thought leadership media opportunities on behalf of university clients (via faculty)
- Obtain brand focused media opportunities for higher education clients
- Work with students and faculty to obtain media placements in local, national, and industry-specific outlets
- Stay on top of the news cycle and identify top news trends and developments for media pitches
- Take part in editorial meetings to identify innovative client opportunities
- Craft unique and compelling pitch and story ideas
- Interview university professors for media strategy and stories
- Create communications/PR strategies for clients
- Assist with writing and editing of content
- Facilitate media interviews between clients and reporters (via phone, email or Zoom)
- Facilitate op-ed's between clients and editors
- Build targeted media lists for outreach with Cision
- Analyze campaign results and prepare client reports
- Join content brainstorm meetings to connect PR services to other service areas and deliverables
- Facilitate ghostwriting assignment with dedicated op-ed writer
THE REQUIREMENTS
- Experience pitching the media
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to be a self starter and self motivated to meet monthly goals
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Quickly adapt to trending news stories
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or related field preferred
- 4+ years experience in PR or media relations
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience using Cision and/or other PR software
- Established media relationships
- Experience building communications plans
- Experience interviewing stakeholders for media pitch ideas, stories, etc.
- Experience with press releases, media kits, and other traditional PR tactics
- Basic understanding of SEO and content strategies
- Video experience and/or knowledge
