Position Summary:

Provides strategic support as it relates to public policy and government affairs initiatives. Translates guidance from the McLaren Health Care Board and CEO into an overarching policy strategy, determining goals and objectives to inform and influence public policy at the state level on issues and in areas of interest to McLaren Health Care Corporation and McLaren Health Plan. Represents McLaren Health Care and its subsidiaries in proactive interactions with high level government officials, political leaders, influential organizations and other relevant thought leaders to ensure government relations and activities advance the organization’s business and industry interests. Develops and leads strategic lobbying efforts to promote McLaren Health Care’s and McLaren Health Plan’s positions to legislators and regulators to build effective and conducive working relationships at the state and local levels of government. Engages and collaborates, as appropriate, with entities whose interests and/or functions may affect McLaren Health Care and its subsidiaries to coordinate policy interests and efforts.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities As Assigned:

  • Provides strategic support and direction on governance and public policy issues of importance to McLaren Health Care (MHC) and McLaren Health Plan (MHP). Confers with officials of state government concerning the interests of MHC and MHP and is responsible for understanding and directly relaying the policy positions in addressing impact of proposed or current legislation.
  • Researches, monitors, analyzes and evaluates legislation and regulation issues that may impact MHC and MHP to determine needs for action and recommends actions to be taken.
  • Drafts legislative and legal language for health policy purposes on behalf of the enterprise.
  • Identifies and develops MHC’s and MHP’s position and lobbying strategies on priority public policy issues and advances the organizations’ position on such issues to governmental authorities and within appropriate industry associations.
  • Responsible for maintaining, creating and/or coordinating internal policies and directives to ensure MHC’s compliance with governmental laws and regulations.
  • Assures MHC’s and MHP’s awareness of active and current governmental legislation that may affect organizational operations.
  • Maximizes governmental affairs and public policy effectiveness with industry associations by making them aware of MHC’s and MHP’s position in the public policy arena.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in business administration, health administration, public policy, political science
  • Six years experience on policy and/or legislative activities

Preferred:

  • Masters degree in business administration, health administration, public policy, political science or law degree
  • Seven years experience with media relations and/or development of public awareness campaigns
  • Seven years experience with state campaign finance rules and regulations

Per Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations, all McLaren employees must be vaccinated for COVID-19 by January 4, 2022. The regulation permits exemptions for employees with qualified medical disabilities or religious beliefs.
