Job description
The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a, collaborative, and innovative Director of Security.

This is a 12 month position, Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend hours are required for special events. The Director of Security will ensure the safety of students, employees, visitors and the physical campus. This position reports to the CFOO
Chapin’s next Director of Security will
Oversee the security and safety of the students, professional community, and visitors at The Chapin School
- Ensure procedures are in place to monitor and secure all entrances and exits of the school. Provide training and instruct security personnel and receptionists regarding safety protocols for school visitors.
- Continuously conduct security assessments of the school and make recommendations to improve physical security (i.e. camera, security system, shot sensors, emergency speakers, radios for personnel).
- Be familiar with the Building Alarm System and communicate with the alarm company as necessary to ensure the system is functioning properly and is upgraded as necessary.
- Monitor the Security and Camera System daily to ensure the safety and security of the students and professional community.
- Advise parents and professional community regarding safety issues when necessary. Prepare reports and memos as needed to properly document incidents affecting the school.
- As member of the school safety team – must keep Plant Director and Associate Plant Director informed on all important information regarding school operations.
- Support major events that require security on and off site (including provide additional security personnel for such events)
- Assist in lost property and theft of personal or school property.
- First responder to Security Alarm Condition (Nurses Office Emergencies, Alarm Calls)
- Maintain all fire and security certificates as required by the school.
- Must be on duty at all major school events.
- Develop Security Budgets
- Walk the building multiple times throughout the day, must check in with each division (This could be the director director and/or the division assistant.)
- Must maintain constant security presence at the Main Entrance
- Provide Safety Protocols and Procedures to all Students at the beginning of the school and throughout the year.
- Assist PA in setting up the Safety Patrol Schedule
- Maintain the digital card entry system including the creation and updating of all Professional Community IDs and, parent IDs.
Be responsible for the following external security responsibilities
- Liaison with neighbors and community groups to resolve issues relating to the school.
- Liaison with the Police Department, Fire Department, Parks Department, NY Sanitation Department, and the NYC Office of Emergency Management and other emergency agencies when necessary. In addition communicate with other city and private agencies as necessary to alleviate problems at the school
- Review internet websites relating to security and public safety agencies such as the Police Department, Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, Homeland Security, National Weather Services, Monitor news outlets and breaking news.
Conduct safety and security training responsibilities which includes
- In conjunction with the Plant Director update and maintain The Chapin School crisis Management Plan, the Evacuation Plan, the Sheltering-In Plan, Lockdown Plan, and the Fire Drill Plan; provide training on these plans to parents, students, and employees.
- Coordinate contingency plans for school trips and attend trips when necessary to assist in the safety and security of the students and faculty.
- Scheduling Security Class Renewal annually for personnel.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in related field
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in building security in New York City; school safety and security preferred
- Collaborative leader and team player with an engaging and positive nature that is student centered
- Ability to work independently on school safety initiatives and see them through to fruition
- Strong communication skills and ability to communicate with school leadership, parents, students and employees both verbally and in writing in a timely manner
- Knowledgeable and proficient in various safety procedures; ability to implement and train employees and students on procedures
- Proficiency with database management required; past experience vetting and implementing a new security database preferred
- Position specific computer proficiency: email communication, running security reports and maintaining a spreadsheet
The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience, the range is $125,000-$145,000 annually.
