Overview

The Director of Transmission and Interconnection is responsible for analyzing and prioritizing interconnection strategies to support greenfield project development and managing GridStor’s utility-scale projects nationwide through the interconnection process.

The position will provide the expertise, tools, and analysis required to identify and execute interconnection approaches for greenfield and M&A utility-scale energy storage projects. Additionally, the position will be responsible for advancing interconnection positions through the study process to commercial operations through coordination with Project Development and the associated project execution engineering support functions. The Director of Transmission and Interconnection will leverage existing relationships with Utilities, Transmission Providers, ISOs/RTOs, and specialist consultants nationally to ensure project interconnection process success. This is an in-person role based in Portland, OR.

Responsibilities

• 7-10yrs of experience in interconnection process management, transmission planning, or power system analysis and a strong knowledge of industry-standard design codes, standards, and regulations.
• Support project acquisition efforts by analyzing interconnection due diligence materials and identifying interconnection risks and mitigations
• Define, manage, and perform systemwide and individual power flow and stability analyses such as contingency analysis, sensitivity analysis, and injection analysis, and interpret the study results to identify the optimal interconnection locations for GridStor assets
• Develop forecasts of regional and network changes to transmission and generation characteristics to inform Gridstor’s project siting strategies
• Develop cost estimates and develop schedules for interconnection and transmission upgrades associated with projects
• Lead the interconnection process for utility-scale storage projects
• Lead technical and commercial negotiations with utilities and maintain interconnecting utility relationships in coordination with project development teams
• Maintain relationships with interconnecting utilities and stakeholders during project-related transmission and interconnection upgrades
• Manage external consultants performing interconnection and transmission studies
• Lead development and implementation of internal tools supporting interconnection processes
• Provide technical materials and modeling data requirements of host transmission providers
• Responsible for obtaining and interpreting the latest transmission planning models from various Utility, Transmission Providers, ISOs/RTOs, and FERC

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering or similar/ equal concentration
• Familiarization with ERCOT (RARF - Resource Asset Registration Forms) submittals/processes is required
• Experience with interconnection requirements and criteria for PJM, ERCOT, CAISO, NYISO, SPP, and WECC is preferred
• 3-5 years of power engineering or interconnection process management is required
• Experience with substation design and transmission-level power system protection and coordination is preferred
• Familiarity with interconnection tariff structures, transmission planning standards, and the FERC interconnection process is preferred
• Team-oriented with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop collaborative working relationships across multiple functional areas in the organization
• Must have good analytical, decision-making, communication, creative problem-solving, and human relations skills
• Must be organized, self-motivated, and capable of working independently and in group settings
• Ability to lead advocacy and technical negotiations to facilitate the advancement of late-stage projects
• Familiarity with engineering software such as PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, and ASPEN
• Strong knowledge of industry-standard design standards and codes such as the National Electric Code, International Building Code, International Fire Code, and other industry standards

About our Location:

GridStor's main office location is in Portland, OR. The office is easily accessible by commuter train and bus and includes onsite parking. In addition, the building offers amenities such as a fitness center, a rooftop employee lounge with an outdoor deck, and periodic social events onsite.
