The purpose of the post is to integrate further the maternity and addiction services and to provide education and support to women who use drugs or who are drug dependent during pregnancy.

The primary responsibility of the Clinical Midwife Specialist (Addiction Services) is to case manage all pregnant substance misusing women linked to Maternity Hospitals in Dublin.The period of time that the Clinical Midwife Specialist (Addiction Services) is involved with the patient is from the time that the pregnancy is confirmed to six weeks following the birth of the baby.

The Clinical Midwife Specialist (Addiction Services) moves between the obstetric services and the drug treatment services to ensure that the patient is followed comprehensively in both services and that good communication exists between both teams.

The post involves attendance at ante-natal and post–natal clinics, neonatal wards where babies are being detoxified and drug treatment centres within their area to follow up with patients It also involves encouraging patients to attend for ante-natal and post-natal visits, follow up for family planning post delivery and working closely with social services and public health nurses around child protection issues in the early post-natal period i.e. up to six weeks following the birth of the baby.
