Nuvance Radiation Oncology in New York has four clinical Radiation Oncology centers in the mid-Hudson Valley region of New York State. The main hospital-based department is Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC) located in Poughkeepsie, NY. The affiliated centers are located south in Carmel (Putnam Radiation Oncology Center, PROC) and Fishkill (FROC), and north in Kingston (Ulster Radiation Oncology Center, UROC). Carmel and Kingston, the two most widely separated centers, are approximately 55 miles apart.
All four centers are served by a single physician group that currently has six ABR-certified Radiation Oncologists. The physics group has 5 full-time licensed Medical Physicists, including one Chief of Physics and, and 2 Medical Physics Residents. The Dosimetry team consists of 5 CMDs including one Chief Dosimetrist. The therapists report to a technical manager.
SUMMARY:
· Provides support to medical radiation physicist in accurate and precise dose calculation and delivery to adult and geriatric patients, as prescribed by radiation oncologists.
· Provides support to the radiation oncologist ensuring consistency and appropriateness of techniques and treatment delivery.
· Develops patients’ treatment plans in accordance to national and local standards,
· Recommends changes based on variances to standards of practice identified when appropriate.
· Provides training to trainee dosimetrists and radiation technologists, and medical physics residents in the performance of their assigned duties and requirements.
· Supports and advises radiotherapy technologists from the simulation to the completion of treatment according to the plan approved by the radiation oncologist and physicist.
· Participates in quality management programs within the department as assigned.
· Provides treatment planning knowledge and expertise to patients and members of the health care team.
· Demonstrates regard for the dignity and respect of all patients, family members, visitors and hospital personnel as defined in the philosophy of Nuvance.
· Promotes a safe and efficient working environment by adhering to hospital and department policies and procedures.
· Performs other duties as specified
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
· Graduate of any AMA approved school of dosimetry or AMA approved school of radiation oncology technology. Associates Degree preferred. Must be eligible to be certified by the MDCB.
Skills:
· Knowledgeable in health care informatics-including the resources, devices and methods to acquire, store and retrieve data. Tools include computers and software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as clinical guidelines, current medical terminology, information and communication systems.
· Possess good communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate the exchange of information with patients, family members, the radiation oncology treatment team as well as outside entities.
· Has high level critical thinking and problem-solving skills, to include the ability to make quick evaluation and decisions for on-line adaptive responsibilities.
· Works independently, but in collaboration with fellow Dosimetrists, Radiation Oncologists and Medical Physicists.
· Has mathematical skills including algebra, trigonometry, and introductory calculus.
· General understanding of scripting across various programing languages.
Experience:
· Requires a minimum of two years’ experience to acquire knowledge and related skills.
License:
· Medical Dosimetry Board Certification (MDCB) or eligibility is mandatory. Board-eligible applicants are to attain certification within 2 years of employment
Continuing Competency:
· Proven competency through the annual performance appraisal process, organizational and departmental competencies, as well maintenance of Medical Dosimetry Board Certification is mandatory.
