Welcome to Mater Emergency Medicine - We run a number of fellowships including Ultrasound Fellow, Airway Fellow, Trauma/Resuscitation Fellow in which candidates are given dedicated non clinical time to pursue training and service development in these areas. The Mater Hospital is Ireland’s most advanced tertiary referral specialist centre and one of the largest university teaching hospitals in the country. It provides dedicated national services for Spinal surgery, Cardiothoracic surgery including heart and lung transplant and is home to Ireland’s most advanced intensive care unit which is the national centre for ECMO. Our ED had an annual attendance of more than 80,000 new patients last year. It is recognised as the busiest adult ED in Ireland with the most diverse, high acuity and challenging patient cohort in the country. It has the most well-developed and established educational programme in emergency and critical care with daily consultant-led training in point of care ultrasound, trauma, simulation training, airway management and resuscitative procedures. The consultant team at the Mater Hospital ED have considerable collective international experience and post-graduate qualifications in a wide range of sub-specialities including pre-hospital, trauma care, point of care ultrasound, sports medicine, geriatric emergency medicine as well as emergency medicine research. The ED has strong international collaborations with the Alfred Hospital Emergency and Trauma Centre, in Melbourne, Australia.

We provide a tailored approach to all our junior doctors with focus on exam preparation and individual career progression. We have very high success rates for our trainees in the Emergency Medicine fellowship exams due to individual mentoring and mock examination practice, and we have a program for audit and quality improvement projects. A number of The Mater Hospital ED consultant staff are Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and have worked extensively at The Alfred Emergency & Trauma Centre and with the Alfred Trauma Service as well as University Hospital Geelong in Victoria. Under their supervision, your time spent in our ED will be accredited for ACEM advanced training should you require this.
