TRC Advanced Energy (TRC) is a nationally known energy efficiency consultancy. TRC collaborates with clients to develop and implement market transforming programs and initiatives that promote energy efficiency, renewable energy, and green building in multiple market sectors across the US. TRC is seeking a qualified individual to support NYSERDA's Empire Building Challenge (EBC) with technical support services, focusing on the technical review of existing EBC demonstration projects. The candidate will also support NYSERDA's Innovative Market Strategies (IMS) Program. The candidate will work closely with NYSERDA EBC and IMS project managers to 1) ensure EBC and IMS demonstration projects are implemented in accordance with project plans, 2) verify estimated savings, and 3) ensure all deliverables meet contract requirements. Candidates must possess strong technical capabilities including knowledge of building systems, energy efficiency, demand management, and sustainability. In addition, the desired candidate will work collaboratively with the Advanced Energy team and clients to provide engineering support for market transforming programs that encourage energy efficiency along the East Coast.
The candidate will be presented with the challenge of a range of C&I projects with a variety of energy systems. The candidate must have experience performing technical review of decarbonization and energy efficiency projects of varying scales, an understanding of the design development and construction management processes associated with implementing energy and carbon reduction measures, as well as activities related with M&V.
There will be significant interface with clients that may require local travel in New York City. The position requires the ability to manage projects, flexibility, diversity of technical expertise, strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, and excellent customer care skills. The candidate will rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and perform a variety of complicated tasks.

This position is based out in the New York City Metro Area and requires working in a midtown New York City office one day per week. The remaining days are currently designated as a Work From Home (WFH) position, under the guidelines outlined in our WFH Policy. WFH arrangements may be revised or discontinued at the discretion of the company.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as a technical resource for NYSERDA EBC and IMS project managers.
- Become intimately familiar with the technical scopes of all EBC and IMS projects.
- Provide objective engineering analysis of EBC projects slated for implementation, to verify feasibility and accuracy of energy savings projections.
- Evaluate savings potential for additional, alternative technical solutions for current measures in case ECMs are not implemented as per original project intent.
- Participate in all check-in meetings with the EBC project team and the NYSERDA project manager, to provide a well-informed technical perspective on the demonstration projects.
- Help translate technical project details for the less technical members of the EBC team.
- Review all deliverables for all EBC projects: conduct technical review, provide comments, engage with project teams as needed to discuss comments and find paths forward when disagreements arise.
- Work collaboratively with the EBC project team, and the NYSERDA evaluation team, to develop an M&V plan for the EBC projects. If an M&V plan has already been developed for a project, the Technical Reviewer will review the plan, and provide any comments or recommendations to strengthen it, as needed.
- Conduct site walk throughs/on-site meetings (for all new EBC projects that will be contracted in Q2 2023, as well as the four (4) projects that are currently being implemented, and IMS retrofit projects as needed)
- Conduct pre-installation site visits.
- Conduct site inspections to verify installation per design.
- During the monitoring phase, complete site visits to monitor compliance with approved M&V plan.
- Provide technical assistance on project level design and planning of retrofit projects completed as part of IMS Program. Common project types include:
- Efficiency improvements and heating electrification projects in community institution buildings
- Heating electrification projects in 1-4 unit residential buildings
- Domestic hot water installations in multifamily buildings
- Conduct technical review of submitted IMS project level planning documents, provide comments, engage with project teams as needed to discuss comments and find paths forward when disagreements arise.
- Support EBC program efforts to develop technical market facing materials, including case studies, technical briefs, etc.
- Support other NYSERDA programs focused on building decarbonization.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Energy). Other engineering disciplines will be considered.
- 5 or more years of experience with reviewing and validating all documents associated with installation of energy and carbon reduction measures, including schematic design drawings, design and construction documents, bids, specifications, etc.
- Demonstrated experience developing M&V plans and conducting related M&V activities.
- Knowledge of IPMVP (IPMVP certification is a plus)
- Knowledge of building systems commissioning, HVAC design, energy efficiency technologies, green building and high-performance design. Hands on experience with mechanical systems is a strong plus.
- Solid communication skills paired with the ability to listen and translate feedback from EBC partners into valuable/actionable insights.
- Knowledge of building decarbonization strategies.
- Energy-related technical knowledge of commercial and multi-family sectors.
- Located in the New York metro area, able to spend time in the NYSERDA office to meet with the Empire Building Challenge and IMS teams in person, and conduct in-person site visits.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to set priorities, collect and document project requirements, successfully handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Desire to be a quick and eager learner of new material and think holistically through complex problems, with technical and non-technical components.
- Problem-solving ability with a proactive and collaborative style that works well in teams.
- Exceptional organizational, time-management, and planning skills.
- Aptitude for communicating (written and oral) technical and program concepts to clients, contractors, consumers, and other interested people or organizations.

Travel: Up to 25% within New York City
TRC works at various federal, state, and local governmental agency sites and client projects that may require an employee to be vaccinated.
