The City of North Las Vegas announces a posting to create an eligibility list and to fill one (1) vacancy for the classification of Engineering Technician I. The current vacancy is in the Development Flood Control Division, Public Works Department. The eligibility list will be utilized to fill vacancies for this classification, for up to one hundred twenty (120) days.
NOTE TO CURRENT EMPLOYEES: Pursuant to the Teamsters collective bargaining agreement, non-probationary employees successfully completing the qualification assessment process will be placed on an eligibility list to be used to fill vacancies in this classification for up to one hundred and twenty (120) days.

- Pay – The starting hourly pay for this position is $24.61 (step 1). All new employees hired for this position will start at step 1 of the range. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.
- Work Schedule – Schedule will be Monday – Thursday 7:00am-5:00pm (Regular and timely attendance is required)
- Environment – Works in a normal office environment where there is little or no physical discomfort associated with changes in weather or discomfort associated with noise, dust, dirt and the like. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Working conditions are typically moderately quiet but are occasionally loud while performing field duties

THE ROLE:
Performs skilled technical engineering and drafting work in support of land development and engineering related activities, relating to the preparation of plans, maps and related drawings.

- 4-day, 36-hour workweek, Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (May vary by position specific needs).

- Performs skilled drafting work relating to the preparation of plans, maps and drawings.
- Prepares base maps and specialized drawings related to zoning, land use, water rights, water/sewer utilities, street improvements, traffic signals, drainage facilities, parks, and public buildings.
- Performs sketches, tracing and lettering.
- Prepares sketches to illustrate present and proposed infrastructure improvements.
- Performs the drafting, updating and reproducing of various record maps.
- Participates in the layout and calculation of projects and makes standard engineering calculations and field measurements.
- Compiles engineering data from area, subdivision and assessment maps and surveying records.
- Prepares graphic illustrations on present and proposed projects.
- Maintains and updates accurate filing and indexing of technical information and related work and researches information as requested.
- Reads and interprets plans and blueprints.
- Performs technical and/or specialized work, which requires the exercise of independent judgment, the application of technical skills, and the knowledge of detailed or specialized activities related to the assigned division or department.
- Reviews project submittals for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with policies and procedures regarding civil improvement plans, maps, technical studies, and other documents.
- Provides technical information to the public or to city staff that requires the use of judgment, knowledge of project status, and the interpretation of policies, rules, or procedures.
- Performs technical day-to-day activities that are required to keep land development projects progressing in an organized, timely manner.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent, two or more years of progressively responsible experience in drafting work or land development processing.
- Associate degree or Bachelor degree in a related field of study is preferred.
- Additional specialized vocational or technical training or education is preferred.
- Experience with computer-aided drafting (CAD) is preferred.
- Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record with the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
- Drafting and designing work.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with internal staff, citizens, and other customers in order to extricate information in a courteous and friendly manner.
- Perform mathematical calculations.
- Apply civil engineering principles and practices to the design of construction projects and to the processing of land development applications.
- Analyze problems and determine cause and solution.
- Observe construction while in progress.
- Use conventional drafting equipment and a computerized system.
- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with customer service interruptions.
- While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk and use hands to finger, handle or feel.
