ENVIRONMENTAL HEATH & SAFETY SPECIALIST

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist has responsibility for driving an EHS culture and mindset across the Wheeling plant while sharing best practices with the other plants. The position will provide Safety training and coaching to achieve improvements in all aspects of the organization. This role will also assist in developing, implementing, and ensuring compliance to EHS plans, programs, and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Support and coordinate on site the implementation of improving major initiatives with the goal of process improvement and loss eliminations: Safety Incidences, Waste, Productivity, Quality etc.
  • Conduct routine facility walk-downs to observe and identify improvement needs regarding unsafe conditions or at-risk behaviors. Communicate with leadership members on adverse observations and how to best intervene, coach or address real-time to meet company expectations.
  • Responsible for training, coaching, and assessing EHS initiatives.
  • Act as a change agent for leading and EHS processes while instilling a culture of accountability.
  • Identify highest priority projects and coordinate various project teams to ensure proper resourcing to drive completion.
  • Involvement in daily production and operations issues to ensure we produce a quality product safely, deliver on our customer goals and optimize efficiency/productivity.
  • Implement and track safety training & compliance modules/learning plans using an LMS (learning management system).
  • Develop, coordinate, and support a central recordkeeping system for safety/environmental compliance.
  • Participate in incident reviews and casual analysis while driving closure to open corrective actions.
  • Ability to extract, analyze and raise awareness through useful data from various systems to identify improvement opportunities. Examples, Red Zone, Daily huddles, Department Mtgs, Email etc. Help track & raise observations to leadership for discussion, while also celebrating positive behaviors.
  • Participate in the review and selection of all new equipment, implementation plans and specifications for construction or installation of new equipment to identify environmental and workplace safety requirements.
  • Assist in leading the on-going development, communication, and training of Job Hazard Analysis for all company locations. Review and recommend measures to control exposures, including substitution of less hazardous materials, use of PPE, work practice changes and engineering controls.
  • Assist in the continued development, implementation, review, testing, and updating of all Safety Programs.
  • During emergencies, serve as an expert liaison to regulatory agencies, provide structure and guidance to promote safety, and protect the banner.
  • Assist with ensuring contractor compliance, meeting or exceeding Ziegenfelder safety requirements.
  • Evaluate and implement new safety and health regulations as they relate to operations across all company locations.
  • Provide project management safety support for all company improvement projects.
  • Assist in OSHA, DOT, and EPA investigations, as required.
  • Assist with WC, Auto, GL, Property, Environmental Claim Management to ensure Claims reporting timeliness, root cause of loss determination and prevention of future claims. Coordinate with claims adjusters and medical providers as needed. Attend Claims Reviews and provide updated claim information to the Leadership Team.
  • Monitor all lost time incidents to ensure prompt return to work by the injured Team Members. Coordinates with insurance claims adjustor, nurse case manager, and physicians on appropriate return to work restrictions.
  • Perform other duties and complete additional projects as assigned.
  • This position will report to the Director of EHS.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business or related field
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment or similar industry a plus
  • Process Safety Management (PSM) experience a plus
  • 2 years of leadership experience; with focus on continuous improvements and/or coaching.
  • Computer skills including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Aptitude for taking complex things and breaking them down into simple concepts to ensure a smooth transfer of skills and knowledge.
  • Able to work flexible hours and extended hours as the need arises.
  • Ability to organize projects, coordinate resources and successfully execute.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Passion for helping people succeed.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Must be able to function in a production environment using standard equipment.
  • Subject to environmental conditions inside and outside, atmospheric conditions, noise, hazards (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, etc.), working in high places (scaffolding or roof tops)
  • Must be able to ascend/descend ladders, stairs, ramps and the like using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.

PREFENENCES

  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma or Kaizen in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with the administration and maintenance of Learning Management Systems
