Job Summary
The Government has committed €1.8bn toward the development of sustainable travel, both public and active, over the next 5 years, while a review of the 10-year National Development Plan has commenced and will reflect the ambitions of Government in the area of sustainable travel for the next decade. In addition, the importance of promoting sustainable travel is recognised in the National Planning Framework which sets out a vision for development over the next 20 years and recognises the importance of sustainable travel within National Strategic Outcome 1: Compact Growth, as well as National Policy Objective 26 with its call for the prioritisation of ‘walking and cycling accessibility to both existing and proposed developments’ and similar policy support afforded by National Policy Objective 64.
Increased numbers of people choosing a sustainable mode of transport benefits society and the economy in a number of different ways and an acknowledged barrier to achieving a significant shift in the numbers of people making that choice is actual and perceived issues in relation to safety and accessibility. Improved, expanded and integrated networks of sustainable travel infrastructure can address that barrier and support the fundamental change in the nature of transport in Ireland needed to address our climate action challenge.
The National Transport Authority has been working with local authorities in recent months to develop a new structure for the delivery of sustainable travel. That work has identified the type and level of resources required across the country to ensure that the increased levels of expenditure planned deliver the right type of infrastructure, in the right place and at the right time. In Clare County Council a team is being established to deliver the Programme across the County.
The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team within the Council, assisting with the implementation of work programmes to achieve goals, targets and standards set out in the Departmental and Team development plans. The Executive Technician is expected to use initiative, work to a high standard and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Education, Training, Experience, etc.
Each candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms:
- have satisfactory experience in a Technical post at the office of Grade II or higher level or in an analogous office under a local authority or health board in the State;
- have on the latest date for the receipt of completed application forms for the office, at least five years satisfactory relevant experience in a Technician office of Grade II or higher level or an analogous office;
- have a wide knowledge of all the technical aspects of local authority work and also a deeper knowledge of at least one relevant section of the work;
- possess adequate training or experience relating to dealings with other departments within their own organisations and with other bodies, and
- have adequate experience in the supervision and control of staff.
