The Port Aransas Ferry Operation runs a fleet of 8 ferries! Three, 20-car ferries and five, 28-car ferries. The operation crosses the Corpus Christi Ship Channel between Aransas Pass Harbor Island to Port Aransas, on Mustang Island. We are open 24-7, 365 days a year and considered a part of SH-361. During emergency events the Port Aransas Ferry Operation is the evacuation route for the City of Port Aransas. Performs highly responsible work directing the operation of the Galveston or Port Aransas Ferry System. Reporting to either the Director of Maintenance or Director of Operations, oversees a large group of marine engineering, administrative, deck, maintenance and supervisory personnel. Oversees a group of professional and technical employees. Work requires frequent contact with private entities and various local, state and federal advisory and regulatory bodies. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.
Essential Duties:
- Ensures the safe and efficient operation, maintenance and readiness of all assigned motor ferry vessels, approach channels, vessel landings, vehicle staging, traffic control areas and other ready equipment afloat and ashore.
- Manages budget. and supervises preparation of the budget and the administration of the annual operating budget.
- Manages and supervises the execution and performance of continuous, all weather ferry operations consistent with the demand of public highway traffic.
- Manages and supervises the execution and performance of personnel, administrative and payroll matters.
- Represents the Department in public affairs matters, to include speaking engagements, calls on local government officials and various local, state and federal regulatory and advisory bodies in which there is a mutual interest.
- Serves as final unit enforcement authority for state regulations governing operation of the ferries.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
- 6 years in marine operations. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
- Must have three (3) years managerial/supervisory experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license at time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have or obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within ninety (90) days of the date of hire.
- Vessel Crew Member Cert given at time of hire.

- Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
- Planning, assigning, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of professional, administrative and technical employees

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
- Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
