The Literacy and Outreach Counselor in the Office of Scholarships and Financial aid will work under their own initiative with limited supervision and are responsible for assisting the Manager of Communications and Financial Literacy in the development and execution of all Financial Literacy efforts. The ideal candidate will be creative and resourceful, must be able to engage effectively with a diverse audience including young adults, parents/family members, and colleagues and be comfortable with technology and teaching both in person and remotely. Demonstrated excellence in teaching or training and bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred, and a solid understanding of Title IV financial aid principles is a must.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Represent OSFA in a professional, knowledgeable, and welcoming manner at various financial literacy events and present financial aid information to both current and prospective students and their families. Event modality, days and times vary but can include virtual, in-person, evening, weekend and during standard business hours. This may include events such as leading workshops or presentations.
  • In collaboration with the Manager of Communications and Financial Literacy, partner with other members of campus and the community to develop and reach additional populations with relevant financial literacy information.
  • Assist in the coordination of OSFA’s social media presence.
  • Communicate clearly in both written and verbal form while providing service in a fast-paced environment.
  • Possess an understanding of the types of required documentation needed from students and the ability to communicate this information to students.
  • Responsible for reading processing notes left by other areas within OSFA and reviewing the student’s financial aid record to provide guidance on next steps and action needing to be taken by the student to continue processing their financial aid.
  • Counsel and advise students about financial aid eligibility, payment options, application procedures, aid programs, costs, indebtedness, money and management and financial planning; individualize information to the unique needs and situation of the student/family.
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of financial literacy event materials including presentation slides and flyers/resources shared with students.
  • Interact with Federal Systems (i.e., COD, CPS, NSLDS, and FAA) and must possess working knowledge of these systems.
  • Read, comprehend, and comply with federal, state, and institutional regulations and policies pertaining to the provision of student financial aid.
  • Interact effectively as a member of a team and working collaboratively with others.
  • Evaluate unusual/mitigating circumstances to determine situations that call for professional judgment to be considered.
  • Meet customer needs, offer options, resolve problems, and follow up with customers; ensure full customer satisfaction without unnecessarily referring customers to other staff members/departments.
  • Answers questions, inquiries or requests from students, parents/ guardians, other adult supporters via multiple methods of virtual and in-person contact including phone, chat, emails, office visit, appointments, and virtual meetings, regarding financial aid programs and eligibility.
  • Identify and prioritize problems; perform research, offer solutions, options, and strategies. Refer to the appropriate person or department as needed, and/or arrange for required support for students. Use information systems to input data, maintain databases, perform research for projects or issues and generate reports.
  • Assist area manager with student hiring and training; and may supervise student workers.
  • Participate in all meetings & committees assigned, provide new ideas and support.
  • Assist with staff training as requested.
  • Assist other areas of the office as requested.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant work experience; or, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
  • Experience with Title IV financial aid principles.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with government, donor and/or institutional rules, regulations, guidelines, and procedures for awarding of Title IV Financial Aid.
  • Experience giving presentations and/or teaching in front of groups of various sizes using different modalities.
  • Experience with working in a college/Higher Education setting.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
