About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF’s Office of Polar Program’s Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision: Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

  • Mission: To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines. The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

Leidos is looking for a Fire Protection Engineer, who will be part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) team and will provide engineering for Fixed Fire Safety Systems (FFSS) at all US Antarctic Program locations. This role includes design of FFSS and will play a key role engineering optimal and risk appropriate fire protection systems for facilities and project engineering. Additionally, this role will be key in optimization of preventative and predictive maintenance of FFSS, developing and supporting system upgrade projects, establishing the economic maintenance strategy and taking an active role in the ASC FFSS work permitting process.

The successful candidate is expected to deploy yearly to Antarctica for 2 to 3 months yearly. This position is comprised of both office work and field work supporting FFSS at USAP locations.

This position reports to Leidos ASC Facilities management and works within an integrated management team of Leidos and subcontract employees.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide technical guidance on the design, installation, maintenance, and modification of all FFSS.

  • Acceptance testing and approval of industrial fire protection project installations.

  • Develop requirements for professional engineering consulting services in support of design of projects and sustaining of current infrastructure.

  • Review and ensure ASC interests are fully addressed on fire safety provisions of the adopted Antarctic Code.

  • Advise and assist leadership for the purposes of safeguarding life and property against fire, explosion and related hazards.

  • Perform studies of buildings with various occupancy classifications and other property before and after construction.

  • Provide peer review of designs and work plans.

  • Support the ASC FFSS permitting process.

  • Provide technical concurrence for all ASC FFSS work permits.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in a fire protection discipline, with 12 years of professional experience or 10 years of professional experience with a related Master’s degree.

  • Licensed fire protection engineer in the US.

  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards.

  • Field experience including managing field changes, quality control, redlining drawings, and other activities supporting successful work completion.

  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, to relay information.

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States.

  • Current United States Passport.

  • Proactively identify any unsafe conditions or hazards and communicate them effectively.

  • Ability to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience planning and executing projects in remote and logistically challenging locations.

  • NICET certifications desired.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

This position requires successful completion of physical and dental examinations, as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements will result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.

Due to contract requirements, U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency is required.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $105,300.00 - $162,000.00 - $218,700.00

Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
