Supervision: Oversees the work of volunteers, fellows and interns contributing to food and wellness education activities.

CommuniCares Food Programs remove barriers to healthy eating so that everyone can access good food to prevent and/or manage chronic disease. We connect patients and staff to each other and to their local food system to build community and restore the natural environment.

The Food & Wellness Education Coordinator works as a part of the Food & Wellness team, comprised of a Food & Wellness Manager, Garden Coordinator, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Registered Nurse, Diabetes Health Educators, and paid and unpaid interns and volunteers.

HOURS/SITE: Full-time: 40 hours per week across CommuniCare sites (Salud Clinic/West Sacramento; Vida Family Health Center/West Sacramento; Davis Community Clinic and Hansen Family Health Center/Woodland). Most work to be performed on weekdays during normal business hours with occasional weekend and evening hours required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following reflects managements definition of essential functions for this job, but does not restrict the tasks that may be assigned. Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time due to business necessity and with reasonable accommodation.

  • Plan, organize and implement whole person educational activities related to topics including food skills, nutrition, tobacco cessation, gardening, and pediatric wellness.
  • Coordinate 1-2 education activities weekly, including planning, procuring required supplies, facilitating classes or liaising with guest instructors, executing, and reporting on activities.
  • Promote and communicate essential class information to staff and to participants.
  • Train, coordinate, and evaluate volunteer and guest instructors.
  • Supervise interns, volunteers, and College Corps Fellows supporting Food & Wellness activities
  • Lead implementation of the Advancing Tobacco Cessation in Community Clinics project.
  • Monitor and evaluate food and wellness education activities and report outcomes to funders and other stakeholders.
  • Create and curate educational content promoting healthy behaviors and opportunities via platforms including social media, waiting room screens, and handouts.
  • Participate in training and networking opportunities including local, regional, statewide and national convenings of food and/or wellness educators.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience: 4-year degree in a health- and/or social science-related field preferred. Health education experience required, including training gained from practical experience and academic courses. Visual arts skills preferred, including graphic design. Experience with persons living with or at risk for diet-related chronic diseases required. Commitments to working with low-income, under/uninsured individuals and experience working within community service organizations are essential.

Special Skills/Equipment: Fluent written and spoken Spanish and English skills are required; other desirable language skills include Russian and Punjabi

Expectations: Proven ability to work independently. Must demonstrate commitment to excellence and attention to detail. Ability to operate office equipment, including computer equipment. Excellent communication skills, strong organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills required. Must have ability to manage priorities and workflow. Flexibility and willingness to work enthusiastically with changing priorities. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to understand and follow written/verbal instructions required. Ability to deal effectively with diverse individuals and communities, external and internal and at all organizational levels.

Requires a high level of mobility, dexterity, and flexibility in order to perform essential functions. The employee will be required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms, and to lift 25 lbs. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Work is performed in both an outdoor urban garden and in a typical office environment with moderate equipment noise. Travel to other agency sites required.

PAY RATE:

  • The pay range for this position is $22.75/hr.-$32.05/hr. Starting pay within this range will vary depending on the job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
  • May be eligible for annual 2% + 0-2% merit-based pay adjustment (0-4%).
