Norm Reeves is a nationally recognized group of privately-owned retail automotive dealerships located in Southern California, Florida, and Texas.

The Business Manager is the head of back-office accounting operations, leads a staff of accountants and bookkeepers, and reports to the group comptroller and on-site general manager. The most important function of the Business Manager is to provide leadership to the business office staff by demonstrating professionalism, ensuring compliance with our accounting methods and processes, and by holding everyone accountable to GAAP standards in our accounting platform.

While the Business Manager works closely with their accounting staff daily, they will also meet and work with other dealership employees including customer-facing sales and service personnel and department managers, as well as interact with the group executive team and comptroller. The Business Manager’s efforts are integral to providing key decision-makers in the company with accurate accounting information, on time, which fully reflects the current and past reality of the business. Without this information, the general manager, department managers and group executives are flying blind or making decisions based on a reality that doesn’t exist!

The Business Manager also sits with the group comptroller monthly to discuss strategic opportunities in the department and contribute ideas for improving business office operations, along with meeting with the group’s tax auditors annually and participating in the annual business forecasting process in conjunction with the GM and department managers.

To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess or develop the following characteristics:

• A personality that is stern and serious when it comes to following processes, but friendly and warm when it comes to helping the team to work together toward common business goals
• Working technical knowledge of the group’s accounting platform, DealerBuilt, or similar experience and a willingness to learn this system which is core to the business office work product
• Desire to show up every day ready to lead the team to greater achievements and not simply “manage” the day-to-day
• College education in business administration or accounting and extensive experience with accounting rules and procedures in the industry is preferred; otherwise, some college education in business administration or accounting and 5+ years’ experience as a business manager in retail automotive
• Strives to create an organized work environment, starting with their own workspace and extending out to their team’s work spaces and the company’s accounting system

The Business Manager has numerous specific daily, weekly, and monthly responsibilities, including:

• Close the books for the month by the 5th when payroll is closed
• Collect receivables (especially Contracts in Transit) within 5 days to ensure the company’s cash position remains strong
• Measure and track company KPIs by position to ensure the efficiency and productivity of all team members
• Payables schedule generated no later than the 10th of the month
• Clear contracts generated by the F&I team daily, with no backlog carrying over throughout the week
• Carry out the monthly reconciliation of accounting statements and submit to the group comptroller
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory reporting as required by state and federal law to protect the company from liability
• Occasional flooring audits by our commercial banking partner
• Recognize and celebrate the team during birthdays, holidays, and other festive events
