About GameChanger:

GameChanger is a highly innovative, first of its kind, student-powered substance misuse prevention movement connecting K-12 students and the educators who care about them with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation to build environments that prevent student substance use before it starts. GameChanger works directly with schools to implement, monitor and sustain the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation’s school-based peer leadership and other prevention programming, found by research to help children make healthy choices about alcohol, opioids, and all other drugs.

About the GameChanger Specialist Position:

  • Candidates must be willing to attend all training and professional development opportunities provided to them upon hire and in an ongoing manner as the science of prevention is ever changing and GameChanger is devoted to giving the most up to date information to our schools

Additional Information:

Beginning Salary is between $35,000 - $40,000 depending on experience

GameChanger Specialist

GameChanger is a highly innovative, first of its kind, Student-Powered Substance Misuse Prevention Movement connecting K-12 students and the educators who care about them with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation to build environments that prevent student substance use before it starts.

GameChanger works directly with schools to implement, monitor and sustain the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation’s school-based peer leadership and other prevention programming, found by research to help children make healthy choices about alcohol, opioids, and all other drugs.

Founded in 2018, GameChanger is an extremely young and quickly growing organization, currently building a large and accelerating prevention initiative to reach across a dozen schools in the 2022-2023 school year, and all public and private schools across the state of West Virginia by the 2027-2028 school year.

GameChanger is seeking GameChanger Specialists to train on and deliver all elements of the GameChanger comprehensive prevention programming model in West Virginia schools and provide these schools and their stakeholders with long-term, consultative support as they discover, expand and sustain their own effective substance misuse prevention programming for K-12 youth.

Responsibilities Overview

The GameChanger Specialist reports to the GameChanger Prevention Director or person assigned by the Director. They are instrumental in high quality delivery and outcomes of the GameChanger prevention programming model across West Virginia schools. The GameChanger Specialist must be willing to travel to schools across the state throughout the school year. They will interact with students, parents/guardians and other community leaders, as well as faculty and administration at the schools they serve. The GameChanger Specialist must train intensively and demonstrate fluency in all GameChanger program model components in order to drive health-based outcomes of the model within West Virginia schools and for their K-12 students.

Position Responsibilities

· Train intensively with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation Prevention Specialist team to develop deep understanding of and ability to practice the GameChanger comprehensive prevention programming model in K-12 school and community environments.

· Deliver research-based prevention programming to the schools they serve, and ensure all Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation programming delivered on behalf of GameChanger is from a health perspective, free from stigma.

· Partner with school staff and most particularly school leadership and designated GameChanger Coachers in schools to help determine how to best tailor programming ot individual school ensuring that GameChanger is bridging the gap between what is already being done in the schools for prevention and what else could be done to help

· Report to the GameChanger Regional Managers and ultimately to the GameChanger Director of Prevention, being at all times open and receptive to guidance and coaching from Managers the and the Director as well as all other formal and informal mentors, peer leaders and temporary or permanent supervisors.

· Actively engage in all assigned professional development trainings, staff meetings, etc.

Required Qualifications

· Bachelor's Degree in education, psychology, prevention science, counseling or other related field

· Ability to be flexible with highly-variable job schedules and assignments during the school year

· Experience working effectively within educational settings with school leadership, administration, students, and larger communities.

· Ability to work independently and within teams.

· Excellent communication skills, experience with and skill for public speaking

· Current driver’s license and willingness to travel as a fundamental and frequent element of the position.

· Embodiment of healthy living in their relationship with alcohol and all other drugs.

· Interest in and passion for understanding and supporting others in their understanding of substance use disorders as preventable conditions and from a health-perspective.

Preferred Qualifications

· Retired teacher, psychologist, prevention science specialist, counselor or other related field.

· Knowledge of the dynamics of substance use disorder and its effects on individuals, families, and communities

· Experience in community-based participatory prevention settings

This position is fully remote with the exception of traveling to the schools served when needed.
