Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field including but not limited to: education, leadership.
  • 1 year of experience working in the education field (K-12 or higher ed) or proven experience in similar organizational settings.
  • Superior organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Ability to establish rapport with adults and students, and serve as a positive role model
  • Track record of taking initiative
  • Must be a self starter
  • Ability to operate in a dynamic environment and be adaptable and remain positive as plans change
  • Prior experience planning and implementing events.
  • Ability to keep detailed records, keep track of payment receipts, and organize proper documentation for purchases

Essential Job Functions
GEAR UP is a federal grant program with a 7-year budget of $29 million with a goal of improving access to and success in postsecondary education. Our GEAR UP research indicates a positive correlation between high quality campus visits and postsecondary enrollment.

Reporting to, and under the direction of the Assistant Director for Higher Ed Partnerships, the GEAR UP Summer College Visit Coordinator will be responsible for serving as the lead coordinator/facilitator for 6 group bus tours to 2 locations in North Carolina (Raleigh, Wilmington). Each group will include approximately 40-48 rising 10th grade students from multiple school districts and 5-8 school chaperones. Each trip will include multiple stops at various college campuses, educational museums, restaurants, etc. and all participants will be staying in residence hall rooms or hotels, including the GEAR UP Summer College Visit Coordinator. The details of each tour will be planned in advance and the Coordinator will be responsible for familiarizing themselves with all of the details and implementing a successful trip.
  • Coordinate/facilitate all aspects of 6 overnight summer bus trips to college campuses across North Carolina.
  • Responsible for implementing all logistical details of the trips including but not limited to: transportation details, activity logistics, daily schedules, meals, safety, room check-in/out, communication with chaperones and campus liaisons, etc.
  • Serve as an advocate for a college-going culture by ensuring students and chaperones are engaged and included on all trips.
  • Adapt to changing environments/needs and course correct trip plans as needed in consultation with supervisor.
  • Establish, nurture, and sustain positive relationships and collaboration between and among Appalachian State University and partners (LEAs, schools).
  • Interact with campus staff and community in a manner that builds long term, positive connections and sets the stage for bus tours in future years.
  • Maintain excellent records of programmatic, administrative, and financial activities on the project.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of program policies and procedures developed by supervisor and Appalachian State University.
  • Work collegially with internal GEAR UP teams (Evaluation, Finance, Services) to ensure grant compliance and audit readiness.
  • Arrive early for all trips to ensure all preparations are in order.
  • Ensuring the safety of all students and staff by following established safety protocols and establishing a culture of positive behavior and support among all participants.


The selected candidate does not have to live in Boone, NC, but will need to attend training on campus and be prepared to travel to meet the bus at various starting point locations using a personal vehicle.

The GEAR UP Summer College Visit Coordinator will need to be available to lead students on trips for the following dates. Hours while on trips will begin at the time of departure and end at the time or return, minus all sleeping hours. Each trip is anticipated at approximately 35-60.

  • July 25-27 (Raleigh)
  • July 31-Aug 3 (Wilmington)
Some additional work days leading up to the first visit will be necessary to get final plans in order and complete training. The number and timing of additional days before, after, and between the trips is negotiable.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as a teacher, school counselor, or other similar position in a K-12 school.
  • Prior experience leading groups of students on multi-day/overnight field trips.
  • Ability to start no later than June 5th, 2023 (negotiable).

Work Schedule/Hours
35+ hours per week on weeks where there is a trip. Additional hours outside of the trips will be needed, and the amount/timing is negotiable.

Physical Demands of Position
Position will require long amounts of walking in a variety of weather conditions. May be responsible for lifting luggage or other boxes such as coolers, food containers, etc. for student snacks/drinks.

Hiring Range
$20-$28 (based on experience)

Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
