Girls Rise Up Summer Camp Dance Assistant Instructor

As the Dance Assistant Instructor for the STEM From Dance Girls Rise Up summer camp, you will assist the Dance Lead Instructor and STEM Lead Instructor with camp instruction, student skill assessment, and general camp duties as needed. You will assist the Dance Lead Instructor in creating and teaching ensemble and small group choreography and assist the STEM Lead Instructor in showing students how their STEM/computer coding projects tie back into the choreography. Additionally, you will also help inspire and build the students’ confidence and critical thinking skills to help them create dance routines that incorporate technology pieces created by the students. Applications for part-time faculty positions are accepted on a continuous basis and reviewed if openings become available. Instructors will be employed as part-time faculty (full-time during the summer) are not entitled to all the rights, privileges, and benefits of regular, full-time employees. Part-time faculty are hired on an "as needed" basis and will work for the duration of time specified by the respective course.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides instruction to middle school-aged students (6-8th grade) during a four-week youth summer camp at the San Jacinto College North Campus with a pre-developed curriculum focused on dance and choreography, how it integrates with STEM technology, and how students can bring their very own ideas to life.
• Assist Dance Lead Instructor with creating and teaching ensemble choreography.
• Assist in coaching students on how to create their own small group choreography that incorporates their technology projects. Genres of dance that are prioritized are Hip-Hop, Contemporary, Afro-Caribbean, and more.
• Assist Lead STEM Instructor by bringing in dance/choreography elements as students plan and execute their technology projects.
• Training with Lead Instructors on pre-developed daily lesson plans that allow students the opportunity to express themselves creatively and become empowered through STEM.
• Assist with assessing and adapting instruction based on students’ progress in and proficiency of dance skills..
• Works collaboratively with the camp’s STEM Instructor and STEM Assistant Instructor on incorporating dance learning objectives and student-led projects into the campers’ STEM curriculum.
• Assists with providing supervision and leadership in the classroom for campers ensuring that the students are engaged and are completing their projects throughout each week.
• Brings forth any student behavior issues to the Lead Instructors if they occur in the classroom and ensures the safety of all campers.
• Enters camper arrivals via an online daily roll sheet and monitors daily student pick-up, staying with all students until their transportation has arrived.
• Will attend pre-camp training sessions to become familiar with the curriculum and complete all required San Jacinto College/State of Texas training modules that are required when working in a classroom with children.
• Assists with other required San Jacinto College summer camp documentation as needed.
• Support general program operations and logistics.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• College sophomore level coursework in dance and/or work experience in dance sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the Dance Assistant Instructor; hip-hop dance experience a plus.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree with 1-2 years successful teaching experience at either the college level, independent school district, or private K-12 school preferred
• Demonstrated experience and maturity in managing a large classroom of middle or high school-aged students preferred
• Previous experience teaching dance preferred
• Experience teaching in an academically diverse and culturally responsive classroom community preferred
