Job description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Works under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor to train and coordinate grounds maintenance duties of staff, including volunteers, prisoners, and others. Supervises and aids in crew duties of maintaining trash and debris removal, privet and kudzu removal, pond monitoring, recycling, and maintenance of meadows, trails, and parking lot areas. Inspects daily activities and instructs assigned crew on proper use, operation, and maintenance of various vehicles and equipment, such as a bobcat and front-end loader tractor, including adding fluids and fuel as needed. Reports work progress and requests supplies and equipment as needed. Prepares reports for on-the-job injuries and property damage. Reviews and keeps employee time records. Assists and leads workers in performing maintenance duties as needed. Provides work direction and maintains records of daily work activities.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to climb onto and operate assigned equipment and to engage and disengage attachments. Must be able to handle various hand tools. Requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, traversing uneven ground, and lifting materials and supplies weighing approx. 50 lbs.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed in an outdoor environment and often exposed to various weather conditions, odors, and dust. Must be available to work weekends.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma/equivalent and five (5) years’ experience in grounds maintenance, including specific experience operating a bobcat, tractor, chainsaw, and riding mower with one (1) of the five (5) years in a lead capacity; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess and maintain a valid Class “B” Commercial driver’s license as a condition of continued employment if assigned to Public Works or Solid Waste Division. Must possess and maintain a valid Class “D” driver’s license as a condition of continued employment if assigned to the Parks Division. Must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. Must successfully complete job-related skills testing as designated by Human Resources to evaluate competencies in operating heavy equipment, such as a front-end loader, back-hoe loader, track-hoe, excavator, motor grader skid steer (bob cat), crane, and bulldozer (crawler tractor).
