Position Overview
The Grounds Maintenance Technician I located within the Landscaping and Grounds division of the Internal Services Department and is responsible for maintaining grounds and plants in an assigned area of the county. This position handles mowing, trimming, cultivation, and maintenance of shrubs, trees, plants and turf grass determining proper care and treatment to ensure good condition.
Examples of Duties
- Operates small to heavy equipment to include commercial mowers, weed eaters, edgers leaf blowers, dump trucks, trailers, sprayers, spreaders, and hand tools in the performance of duties
- Mows, trims, edges, and gives general care to overall landscape and turfgrass areas
- Participates in the application of herbicides, insecticides, and other chemicals that may be applied to trees/shrubs, turf grass, or plant collections
- Participates in the planting and maintenance of flowers, trees/shrubs, and ornamentals on assigned area grounds
- Plants flowers and bulbs and transplants items as needed
- Plants, cultivates, prunes, and sprays trees and shrubs
- Participates in the removal of dirt, debris, rubbish, snow, leaves and refuse, and may participate in the removal or cutting down of trees
- Participates in erosion control practices, irrigation installations & maintenance, and drainage solutions
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited two-year college or technical school with a degree in agriculture and natural resources, greenhouse and grounds maintenance, horticulture technology, landscape gardening or closely related field; or graduation from high school or GED and two (2) years of related experience in horticultural work including the operation of various landscape equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Manager's Preference: Irrigation installation and maintenance experience
Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
Negative drug screen and background check are required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of grounds keeping and horticultural practices, cultivation, pruning, spraying and trimming requirements of shrubs and trees, and plant maintenance procedures used in landscape installation and ground maintenance

Knowledge of all equipment and specialized tools used in landscape work

Knowledge of plant collection, which impacts the cultivation and maintenance of the plants

Ability to observe plants and identify plants and plant problems

Ability to assess condition and health of plants
