Job description
The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.This position performs: applications of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides; tree and shrub pruning; maintenance of flowering plants, shrubs, grounds covers and trees; mowing of large turf areas; trash collection; other general common grounds related maintenance tasks; operation and care of tools, equipment and other machinery used in landscaping, grounds maintenance and snow removal on a large scale. Normal working hours are: Tuesday 6:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. -3:00 p.m. Other hours required on occasion.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
The successful candidate should be in good physical condition capable of performing manual labor tasks in various situations and conditions. Must have a general knowledge of and experience in grounds maintenance work within this region including: application of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides; tree & shrub pruning; skilled operation and care of large commercial grounds maintenance equipment; installation, cultivation and care of trees, shrubs, ground covers. Must have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written work assignments. Must have a valid NC Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain a NC Commercial Driver’s License Class B within 6 months of hiring to maintain employment.
Minimum Qualifications
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of high school. 4 years of progressive experience in planting, cultivation and care of shrubs and trees of this region; experience in the maintenance and care of turf grass of this region on a large scale and equipment operation required to perform such tasks. Commercial Driver’s License. NC commercial or public pesticide applicators license.
