Under regular supervision, performs a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks on City property and roadways. Reports to Grounds Maintenance Supervisor or designee.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Performs a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks as assigned, including but not limited to planting trees, shrubs, sod and flowers. Raking or blowing leaves/grass clippings.

Performs a variety of general maintenance and cleaning tasks at parks and recreation facilities. Removes trash, cobwebs, litter and other debris.

Maintains the grounds of various sites and public compounds.

Maintains the cleanliness, functions and appearance of athletic fields. Uses specialized machinery to groom clay infields and apply lines on playing fields. Performs turf maintenance functions such as top dressing, aerating, fertilizing, and spraying of chemicals.

Removes weeds, trimming pruning and applying pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer.

Mows grass, rakes, waters plants and replaces sod.

Prepares and treats soils for planting, setting out plants and trees.

Assists in the restoration, and construction of City park sites.

Opens and closes public gates at appropriate times. Turns athletic field lights on and off as required for evening sporting events.

Performs manual labor for departmental and citywide special events, includes but not limited to assembling and setup of equipment as specified on facilities use diagrams, erecting and dismantling of tents, portable stages, & Show Mobile, general cleanup before, during and after event.

Maintains assigned equipment in proper condition and repair and performing general laboring tasks related to landscape and grounds maintenance work.

Identifies desirable and undesirable plants and vegetation. Trims and cuts grass and hedges. Clears fields of brush and undergrowth and prunes and removes trees.

Removes fallen and standing trees from City streets and grounds. Trims branches from trees in order to preserve pedestrian and motorist visibility of street signs, stop signs and traffic lights. Cuts and removes dead or diseased trees.

Performs required site work during landscape construction projects including preparation and restoration of site.

Assists in the repairs and installation of irrigation systems.

Picks up refuse and litter along publicly maintained roadways and grounds.

Performs simple maintenance on landscaping equipment such as lubrication of power tools, changing blades and chains according to preventive maintenance schedule.

Assists in the assignment and supervision of daily work by field crews engaged in landscaping, urban forestry, and grounds maintenance.

Operates a variety of power and manual landscaping equipment and tools such as tractors, augers, skid steer loaders, trenchers, mowers, hedge trimmers, power pruners, leaf blowers, chippers, chain saws and other equipment as assigned.

Drives and operate vehicles hauling dirt, compost and other loose materials.

Operates riding mowers and other equipment assigned including tractors, mechanical tools, vehicle, telephone, backpack sprayer, two-way radio, etc.

Supports the community in any such form of natural disaster, including hurricanes, flooding, high winds, and clearing the roads of debris.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Public Services personnel and the public.

Moves or aids in moving heavy containers or equipment, and large or bulky objects.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Will be required to work on City holidays and weekends.

Responds to emergencies 24 hours a day.

Performs related duties as required.

May be required to respond to after hour emergencies.

Minimum Training and Experience

Requires high school diploma or GED, and at least two years experience in grounds maintenance to include use of commercial lawn equipment or any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid State of Florida driver's license.
