POSITION DESCRIPTION
Taylor Shellfish is a fully integrated company from breeding our own brood stock to harvesting the product off our farms for wholesale and retail sales. The Kona Hatchery Manager is responsible for all commercial hatchery operations including algae, larvae and seed production. In addition, the Manager will stay connected with other Taylor hatchery and nursery operations in order to meet the Taylor Shellfish company seed goals together.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITES
- Coordinate all hatchery and nursery areas to yield scheduled production. Items to coordinate include algae systems, obtaining brood stock, conditioning broodstock, spawning schedule, harvesting and screening seed, etc.
- Maintain the hatchery and nursery systems through good husbandry practices.
- Manage the employee life cycle with guidance from the company HR department (selecting, hiring, training, developing, and retaining employees)
- Strive to create an environment that leads to positive crew morale.
- Participate in larvae/seed planning meetings and keep staff informed as to what the current production goals are.
- Manage administrative actions including, payroll, project planning, company Safety Program implementation, Environmental Code of Practice (ECOP) compliance and shellfish health inspections.
- Work with our regulatory team to make sure all import permits and other permits required to operate are kept current.
- Balance needs between species based on production schedule goals.
- Be aware of hatchery budget and work within the departments parameters.
- Work with the CAP EX committee to manage the major hatchery expenditures.
- Attend company and outside meetings as assigned.
- May be required to do other tasks as needed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Organized with good computer skills including Microsoft office software
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to speak comfortably about sustainability, aquaculture and marine biology
- Demonstrate leadership by displaying your job expertise, flexibility, positive attitude, initiative, organization, communication skills and enthusiasm.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in the science field or equivalent direct experience
- 5+ years’ work experience in a related field
- Background in biology preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to sit, stand and/or walk for up to 10 hours per day
- The employee is required to be able stoop, bend, kneel, twist and squat
- The employee needs to be able to lift up to 50lbs.
- The vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
- Must be able to speak and hear well enough to communicate with co-workers and the public
