We are seeking a Health and Safety Coordinator in Clayton, IA. The Health and Safety Coordinator will work will all departments throughout the company to assist in the implementation of company policies that insure team members go home safely on a daily basis. This position reports to the Health and Safety Director and works with other team members to improve the health and safety culture of Pattison Sand Company, LLC.


Primary Responsibilities

Our Health and Safety Coordinator is essential to ensuring safety is the first and highest priority throughout the company. This position works directly with the Health and Safety Director in administering the company health and safety program by providing support in the field or in an administrative capacity. Additional duties include audit processes to ensure the Health and Safety internal programs conform not only with company requirements but with all applicable local, state, federal and business requirements.

  • Administer, direct, and manage compliance with company safety programs, policies, and accident prevention efforts to ensure company safety goals are met
  • Work with the safety team to change and/or adjust safe work procedures as may be required to ensure the safety of all affected employees, contractors, sub-contractors, and visitors to the site
  • Develop, organize, and implement safety-related programs that meet or exceed company safety standards
  • This includes the ability to make independent judgments concerning the general safety of our work
  • Assist with the development and implementation of company “Safe Operating Procedures” (SOP’s)
  • Assist with Incident / Accident Investigations / Root Cause / Corrective Actions
  • Conduct and document job site inspections and audits with special emphasis on hazard recognition, unsafe behaviors, and correction of potential hazards and risks identified, as well as MSHA Compliance throughout the mine site
  • Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize activities to meet goals and deadlines
  • Must possess the ability to think independently, communicate clearly
  • Facilitate the assist with implementation of safe work behaviors/corrections
  • Initiate, coordinate, and conduct safety meetings and training to ensure the effective communication of company policy and safety standards
  • Participate in and assist with MSHA inspections
  • Assist with insuring compliance by all contractors, sub-contractors, vendors, and visitors with all company safety policies/procedures and requirements, as well as MSHA and regulatory requirements
  • Follow detailed instructions and procedures to complete tasks and required documentation
  • Assist with scheduling and conducting all industrial hygiene monitoring, including but not limited to respirable dust, noise exposures, and clean cab initiatives
  • Maintain air, noise, and gas monitors including calibrating monitors and placing them in the field for proper testing
  • Record and report all findings with air, noise, and gas monitor studies conducted in the field
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the DOT trucking requirements
  • Assist with managing SDS system, ensuring that all SDS’s are inputted into the system as well as assist in maintaining a system to assure it is kept up to date
  • Assist with the development and review of job safety analysis (JSA’s) for each department and activity. This includes assessing the need for and facilitating the training for each JSA as may be required
  • Act consistently with integrity and credibility, by abiding by and assuring site-wide compliance with all company Health and Safety Policies, Safe Work Procedures, and MSHA requirements on a daily basis
  • Possessing a First Aid / CPR / AED Certificate is a plus

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Working knowledge of MSHA a plus
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills required
  • Field Safety Experience
  • Ability to teach, mentor, and lead
  • Ability to work in high production environment (50+ hours/week, including nights and weekends, are expected) and respond quickly and effectively under pressure and deadlines
  • Ability to make independent judgments to manage and facilitate company programs/policies as they relate to the safety of our work
  • High attention to detail
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Strong organization skills
  • Good analytical skills
  • Proficient spoken and written English
  • Able to wear a half-mask respirator for up to 12 hours at a time
  • General computer knowledge
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear
  • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to operate a computer keyboard
  • The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and must have the ability to climb stairs and ladders in a mining/plant environment


Education & Work Experience

  • Associates degree or High School Diploma
  • 2 years of field experience in Health and Safety or Supervisor experience in mining, construction, refining and/or rail industries is preferred

Credential & Licenses Required

  • Part 48 MSHA required. Training available onsite
  • All Pattison employees must hold a valid Driver’s License
