Job description
Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) is a successful municipally owned utility provider currently seeking a full-time Health & Safety Risk Coordinator. We are seeking an organizational leader with experience serving in a customer-focused operation. SMU has proudly met the electric and water needs of local Spencer, Iowa residents since 1942. Telecommunication service offerings were added for the community in 1997.
This position has responsibility planning, directing and coordinating SMU’s comprehensive safety and training programs to minimize risk, promote a healthy work environment, ensure proper instruction, and support the mission and goals of the entire utility.
The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this position. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with management to develop, prepare, and implement safety policies and procedures.
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes, and rules.
- Ensures completion of required OSHA recordkeeping and reporting.
- Prepares correspondence, reports, statistical data, policies, and manuals related to the utility’s safety program.
- Provides technical and administrative support to the safety committee.
- Identifies opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and health problems.
- Conducts employee training on applicable safety standards.
- Reviews safety training and recommends revisions, improvements, and updates.
- Conducts safety inspections and audits to assess employee compliance with safety regulations.
- Reviews accident and incident reports.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Our Requirements:
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in risk management, industrial safety, occupational safety or related field preferred. A combination of relevant education, certifications, and work experience may be accepted in lieu of the degree.
- 1 to 3 years of relevant work experience in safety preferred
- Required to possess and maintain a valid Iowa driver’s license and meet SMU insurability requirements.
