Overview:
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic, ASE performs the full range of repair and modification work on diesel and gasoline vehicles heavy equipment to include but not limited to; commercial, non-tactical, tactical and tracked vehicles, passenger cars and trucks, forklift trucks, warehouse tractors, large material handling equipment, generators, trailers, multi-wheel drive vehicles with standard or automatic transmissions.Responsibilities:

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic, ASE performs the full range of repair and modification work on diesel and gasoline vehicles heavy equipment to include but not limited to; commercial, non-tactical, tactical and tracked vehicles, passenger cars and trucks, forklift trucks, warehouse tractors, large material handling equipment, generators, trailers, multi-wheel drive vehicles with standard or automatic transmissions.
- Perform all maintenance actions in accordance with AR 750-1, Army Materiel Maintenance Policy, and conducted in accordance with The Army Maintenance Management System (TAMMS) as outlined in DA PAM 750-8, DA PAM 750-1, AR 710-2, DA PAM 710-2-2, applicable LIS publications, other Governmental regulations and directives as applicable, installation policies and procedures, and accepted industry standards for the safe and efficient operation of equipment repair and supporting functions.
- Determine and order repair parts on each work order.
- Fabrication of items such as fittings, lines, and hoses; repairs to interior/exterior lighting; engine/power train assemblies; air-conditioning and heating systems of vehicles.
- Conduct special purpose testing to include, but not limited to die-electrical test, component function test, load test, and applicable pressure tests.
- Test drive vehicles, and test components and systems, using equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, compression gauges, and computerized diagnostic devices.
- Examine vehicles to determine extent of damage or malfunctions.
- Repair, reline, replace, and adjust brakes.
- Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.
- Confer with customers to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems, and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements.
- Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups.
- Repair and service air conditioning, heating, engine-cooling, and electrical systems.
- Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers' performance specifications.
- Review work orders and discuss work with supervisors.
- Tear down, repair, and rebuild faulty assemblies such as power systems, steering systems, and linkages.
- Repair and maintain equipment to include but not limited to material handling equipment, generators, semi-trucks, light trailers, and flat trailers.
- Inspect, repair, and replace defective or worn parts, such as bearings, pistons, and gears.
- Overhaul and test major components, such as engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Disassemble and reassemble heavy equipment and components.
- Perform Field and Limited Sustainment Level maintenance on gasoline and diesel fueled equipment and their associated components.
- Troubleshoot, inspect, test, repair, adjust, and replace malfunctioning equipment or components.
- Enter faults and corrective actions in the maintenance records and verifies that all work is performed satisfactorily.
- Maintain power-assisted brake systems, vehicle suspension systems, vehicle wheel/hub assemblies, vehicle mechanical (manual) steering systems, vehicle hydraulic (power) steering systems, vehicle crane/hoist/winch assemblies, vehicle exhaust systems, cooling systems, starting systems, charging systems, electrical systems, transmission assemblies, transfer assemblies, axle assemblies, drum brake systems, hydraulic brake systems, air/hydraulic brake systems, fifth wheel assemblies, and material handling equipment hydraulic systems.
- Adjust and make repairs to maintain operation of machines and equipment and determine cause of malfunction or defects and repairs or replaces worn, damaged, or defective parts.
- Perform welding and minor body repair.
- Other duties as assigned
- High School graduate or equivalent
- Military or civilian training in heavy equipment maintenance.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic preferred.
- ASE Certifications for T2 Diesel Engines, T4 Brakes, T6 Electronic and Electric Systems, T8 Preventive Maintenance and Inspections.
- Possess and maintain a current California Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to pass a National Agency Check (NACI).
- Experience in repairing engines, transmissions, transfers, hydraulic, air brakes, electrical, power train and general mechanical maintenance systems of moderate difficulty.

- While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee may use repeated motions that include the arms, wrists, hands and/or fingers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
