By joining the District 2 Project Delivery & Preservation Branch II Daviess County Unit as a Highway Technician Assistant II you will have the opportunity to perform basic level work and assist with intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations, as well as learn to operate intermediate level equipment.

Holders of the Highway Technician Assistant II position will complete tasks such as:
  • Perform basic level roadway maintenance work. Learn to drive intermediate Commercial Vehicles.
  • Learn to operate road maintenance equipment to keep Kentucky highways safe for travelers.
  • Haul materials to job sites and perform road maintenance work. Flag traffic & set up work zones
  • Clear roadways of snow and ice in the winter.
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
  • Operation of intermediate commercial vehicles.
  • Roadway repairs and routine maintenance on roadways.
  • Snow and ice removal.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
  • 2 years of highway maintenance or construction experience.
  • Class B CDL license
  • Flagging traffic in work zones. Work Zone set up experience.
Additional position information (travel required, standing/stooping/bending/lifting, sitting at a desk, etc.) Incumbents in this job title should possess the ability to work, sit, stoop and bend. Should be able to lift and carry 50 pounds. Must be able to respond to emergencies. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of construction or highway maintenance experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology, or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class B commercial driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification.. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 1 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
