OVERVIEW - Dane County is recruiting for Information Technology Specialists. The current vacancies are full- time (1.0 FTE) positions located within the Clerk of Courts and Human Services Departments. However, the eligible list created from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future vacancies that occur within the next six (6) months.

DEFINITION - Under general supervision, perform computer hardware diagnoses, software support and troubleshooting, and resolve technical end-user problems. Install, maintain and support PC software, hardware and peripherals running on local and wide area networks. Perform user application design and programming.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Provide user application support by training users on application usage, acting as first level support for applications by answering questions over the phone or email, setting up remote user applications for users to access Dane County systems and programs, assigning security settings for application use along with creating user reference material on usage of applications. Provide hardware support by diagnosing local and network printer issues, NetStation issues, issues with peripherals including but not limited to faxes, copiers, scanners, phones (IP, analog and mobile), interactive displays, audiovisual systems, digital projectors and SMART technology as well as imaging, updating and configuring laptops and workstations. Provide support by installing, imaging, configuring and updating NetStations, workstations, laptops, network printers, upgrade hardware on PCs and install network port activation as needed. Develop business rules for new applications, working with programmers on design issues and conveying user feedback. Provide custom reports using structured query language syntax, view, queries, tables, and forms for data analysis regarding case information and office performance for internal and external use, as well as working with staff on correcting issues in data integrity and auditing the system for data integrity.

These additional duties may vary by Department:

ALLIANT ENERGY CENTER (AEC): Maintain and service a wide network of Ruckus powered Access Points and Hewlett-Packard (HP) Switches connected through the campus. Help create and manage a series of Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) as needed per the request of individual events and shows held at AEC, as well as by the needs of the AEC systems. Maintain clear and detailed documentation of all Network setting and port configurations for the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) and many Independent Distribution Frames (IDFs) throughout the campus. Configure Serve Set Identifiers (SSIDs) to best suit the ever changing needs of events held at the AEC, as well as the needs of staff and WiFi based systems within the facilities.
Maintain clear and up-to-date information on all Ethernet and fiber connections between and throughout facility buildings.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE: Assist in the overall implementation, maintenance and evaluation of the District Attorney’s case management system (PROTECT). Maintain the DA’s digital evidence management system and perform video editing. Participate in the department’s internal project management team reporting on and helping to manage the various department IT projects and maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of new technologies.

CLERK OF COURTS: Responsible for the overall implementation, maintenance and evaluation of the State of Wisconsin Court Information System (CCAP) for the Dane County Courts; as well as coordinating integration with other County and State systems. Maintain and support audio visual and phone systems; as well as provide procedural documentation and training on technical systems to court management and staff. Order and manage office supplies and oversee disposal of surplus equipment. Perform daily accounting duties and serve as the primary backup to Accounting Assistant.

HIGHWAY & TRANSPORTATION: Maintain and support system interfaces between
CHEMSPRO and other Highway applications. Develop maps in ArcGIS, create and maintain shape files of road inventory and other Highway Department assets. Develop, manage and maintain department databases to allow for data integration between specialized Highway software for use by Highway Staff. Download all traffic counters using STARnext software and process traffic counts. Enter and maintain data in various online WisDOT applications. Perform backup duties for department accounting functions. Administer grant programs.

HUMAN SERVICES: Provide end user support for applications. Create documentation and provide end user training. Perform user application testing of a mix of custom developed and purchased software applications. Manage, troubleshoot and plan updates of assigned systems. Lead implementation of assigned technology projects. Create forms, write reports and update website content.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE - Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to an Associate’s degree in Information Management and two (2) years of professional experience working with user support, network systems, hardware installation, and/or application design.

The starting level within this classification series will be determined based on an evaluation of the knowledge and experience of the staff being hired.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must have a valid driver’s license, or access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORK REQUIREMENTS - Normal office environment. May require the lifting of heavy objects (computer/network equipment, etc.) with and without assistance. Ability to lift, carry, transfer computer equipment and/or boxes in hands or via cart. Manual dexterity using fine and gross motor skills. Good visual acuity and hearing with or without corrective devices. Must have ability to multi-task with speed and accuracy and in some cases, in fast-paced offices where workload is time sensitive and deadlines are dictated by Wisconsin Statutes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES - Ability to resolve problems efficiently and effectively, recognizing customers’ technical competence levels, and ability to approach each level appropriately. Knowledge of Microsoft Office application software, Windows desktop operating systems, Structured Query Language
(SQL) syntax, relational database concepts and design flow. Knowledge of basic networking fundamentals and PC hardware and peripherals. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Ability to balance, prioritize and organize multiple tasks. For Highway Department: Also requires knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and practices of bookkeeping and accounting (Highway).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $34.66 - $47.51 per hour
