Description:

Primary responsibilities include performing all necessary procedures pertaining to accessioning and technical preparation of all pathology and cytology specimens. This individual must function with a high degree of technical expertise regarding handling of specimens to ensure accuracy of diagnoses made from specimens submitted for evaluation. Effectively and efficiently prioritizes workflow within the department. Uses the laboratory computer system and equipment.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education:

• High School Diploma

• Two years of college course work completed (40-60 credit hours) with emphasis in a science curriculum or equivalent with 12 hours Science credits preferred.

• Associates of Science, Applied Science (or similar) preferred.

Experience:

• One year experience working in Cytology Preparation and/ or Histology Processing preferred, with knowledge of medical terminology.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients and other health care professionals. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when performing job responsibilities. Ability to work and stand for approximately 60% of work time. Organizational skills necessary to prioritize work. Flexibility to accommodate task and location reassignment as needed. Familiarity and comfort with using computers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE
1. Picks up pathology specimens from various locations throughout the hospital and campus such as surgery, endoscopy, etc.
2. Full registration for outreach specimens with orders for Surg Path, Cytology and Molecular pathology procedures. Includes insurance entry and verification.
3. Responsible for proper handling, accessioning, and billing of all pathology specimens through entering data into the LIS computer application.
4. Prints labels and work lists.
5. Answers telephone and assists coworkers, patients, staff and pathologists as needed
6. Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of Pathology and Cytology Processing and procedures including NONGYN's and Liquid Based PAP's, using established quality control standards to ensure patient safety.
7. Stains and coverslips all NON-GYN, GYN, and other pathology slides utilizing proper techniques.
8. Proper use of required laboratory equipment and performs necessary quality control and maintenance of assigned lab equipment and records.
9. Assists with basic or designated Histology procedures.
10. Cleans and stocks all work areas.
11. Distributes slides and paperwork to cytotechnologists or pathologists as needed.
12. Monitors inventory for Pathology areas.
13. Follows policy and procedures for storage length and proper disposal of blocks, slides, surgical specimens, requisitions, and reports.
14. Effectively and efficiently prioritizes workflow within the department.
15. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
16. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to Trinity Health. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
17. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Trinity Health.
18. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
