Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Requirements
- Knowledge and skills typically acquired by completion of an Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science or similar life science (e.g. biology, chemistry), from an accredited U.S. College or University (foreign degrees must be officially assessed to determine U.S. equivalent). Previous experience in a clinical laboratory may be considered in lieu of educational requirements.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Proactively contributes to Eskenazi's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development and Excellence
- Test order entry:
- enters test orders into the computer system from paper request forms or physician order sheets
- ensures the specimen received is appropriate for the order
- ensures appropriate identification of all requisitions and samples
- Maintains a minimal error rate for billing issues
- Evaluates acceptability of specimens for testing
- Identifies and documents specimen problems and rejected specimens
- Follows laboratory procedures to perform Microbiology specimen processing, including centrifugation, tissue grinding, media selection and setup
- Uses aseptic technique to process microbiology cultures
- Performs simple laboratory testing as trained
- Operates and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment properly
- Prepares reagents and solutions as instructed
- Maintains microbiology records including maintenance and quality control records
- Maintains sufficient supply inventory for section
- Provides quality customer service:
- respectfully greets customers
- answers telephone promptly
- looks up test results
- answers customer's questions or gathers information and calls back or passes information to appropriate individual
- Complies with departmental, hospital, and regulatory policies
- Ensures that laboratory management is informed of existing and/or potential departmental problems that require decisions or intervention to resolve
- Assists in the training and evaluation of new employees on proper microbiology specimen processing techniques
- Assists technologists as assigned
- Uses departmental supplies (including computers and electronic devices) appropriately
- Identifies and solves problems independently
- Manages time effectively and efficiently completes work assignments
- Serves as a mentor/teacher for others as assigned
- Successfully completes competency testing for each area of responsibility as assigned
- Consistently follows established safety policies and procedures
- Consistently uses proper PPE and safety devices
- Self-starter, arrives to work on time and on scheduled days, and begins work promptly
- Participates in continuing education and in service educations opportunities according to policy
- Prioritizes and organizes work effectively
