CLASS TITLE: Landfill Equipment Operator

DEFINITION:

An employee in this class will be under the supervision of the Landfill Superintendent and the Director of Solid Waste Management. Duties may include but not be limited to the operation of Landfill rolling and track type equipment. A working knowledge of landfill operations and procedures would be beneficial. Secondary duties may include pickup of items from the transfer stations, pickup of Smith Island waste from the County dock in Crisifield, supervision of an inmate crew at the landfill, and other duties as needed. The operator will be required to work in all weather conditions under minimum supervision. Saturday work will be required on a rotating basis. Operator will also be required to perform daily and weekly equipment preventative maintenance and submit reports.

EXAMPLES: (Examples are illustrative only)

• Drive and operate passenger vehicles, a cube truck, backhoe, and other rubber tire equipment.
• Operate the following track type heavy equipment: bulldozer, excavator, and front-end loader.
• Operate a steel wheeled landfill compactor.
• Operate a track type off-road marsh buggy style excavator. Work will include reconstructing ditches in marshes and other low land areas throughout the County and Smith Island.
• Inspect and maintain County installed tide gates.
• Perform other drainage department functions.
• Digging and loading dirt from the County borrow pit.
• Maintaining properly graded slopes at the borrow pit.
• Perform all operations associated with the County landfill.
• Perform preventative maintenance on trucks, landfill equipment, the marsh buggy excavator, and submit reports.
• Complete an operator’s daily checklist for maintenance of equipment.
• Inspect vehicles and make repairs.
• Supervise an inmate crew to pick up trash and perform other duties.
• Perform all other duties as assigned to include: grass cutting, equipment repair, transfer station duties, apply grass seed, spray straw to cover landfill slopes and place straw bales to prevent erosion, scrape, sand, and paint equipment, pickup Smith Island waste from the Crisfield dock, change tires on small and large vehicles, remove snow, and other assigned tasks.
• Work within the Somerset Count Handbook of Rules and Regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Operator is considered as an essential employee and required to work when needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to operate and perform routine preventative maintenance of equipment such as a track excavator, track front end loader, track bulldozer, landfill compactor, off-road marsh buggy excavator, and backhoe.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions: keep records and logs, complete written forms, and communicate with the public and co-workers.
• Ability to perform manual physical labor including frequent walking, bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying heavy objects.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND EDUCATION:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Ability to read and write English.
• One year of accident free driving.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

• Class C Driver’s License or equivalent
