Purpose of the Post

The Lead Midwife for fetal Monitoring will support and work with the Director of Midwifery, the Clinical Director/Clinical Obstetrician.

This is a pilot/new post therefore the lead midwife for fetal monitoring will liaison with the National Women and Infant’s Health Programme in developing a programme plan to achieve better birth outcomes.

The post holder will be a highly visible midwifery champion for fetal heart rate interpretation through demonstration of expert clinical knowledge and practice within the antenatal and intrapartum period. Education and training of maternity staff is a fundamental element of this post.

The post holder will lead on and support staff to develop their fetal monitoring skills when caring for women in labour, including both intermittent auscultation and continuous monitoring.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must at the latest date of application:

1. Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc.

i) Be registered in the Midwives Division of the Register of Midwives kept by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or be entitled to be so registered.

And

ii) Have at least 5 years post registration experience (or an aggregate of 5 years fulltime post registration experience) of which 2 years must be in the speciality of Maternity.

And

iii) Candidates must demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development.

And

iv) Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability including a high standard of suitability and clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.

2. Annual Registration

Practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the relevant division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.

And

Confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

3. Health

A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

4. Character

Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character

Post Specific Requirements

• Demonstrate significant depth and breadth of post midwifery experience as relevant to the role.

• Experience in:

• Changing clinical practice

• Developing people

• Clinical teaching

• Labour Ward experience

• Evidence of:

• Significant experience in midwifery practice and leadership

• Innovation practice that involves developing staff, teaching and assessing in the clinical area

• Reviewing or being involved on the review of serious clinical incidents
