Job description
The full-time Lead Lifeguard is a skilled position with more than average difficulty in lifeguarding and swim instruction at a municipal pool. An employee in this class is responsible for the supervision and instruction of swimming and a variety of recreational activities at a City swimming pool and assist in the oversight of facility operations. This includes efficient and safe operation of a municipal swimming pool for the convenience, enjoyment and safety of patrons. This is a supervisory position that oversees all Lifeguard staff and activities within the facility. A Lead Lifeguard is responsible for the supervision of subordinate staff, pool patrons, ensuring routine maintenance is done i.e. cleaning restrooms, trash, etc., and assist with staffing schedules for different programs offered at the facility.
- Ensures safety of patrons while utilizing swimming and fitness facilities.
- Ensures routine maintenance is done (i.e., Cleanliness of the facility, safety equipment).
- Creates staff schedule for various programs at the facility, with assistance from the Aquatics Coordinator or designee.
- Works with Coordinator on facilitating the needs of groups (i.e., Swim team, Dive Team, Water Polo, and Outside training groups).
- Create daily rotation schedule.
- May be required to assist front desk staff and other areas related to customer service as needed. May also be required for learn registration and payment software (Rec Trac) utilized by the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Assist with implementation of staff in-service training and keeping staff skill/certifications up to date.
- Assists with scheduling of facility events and training schedules for visiting teams/groups.
- Assist with pre-employee skills testing.
- Assists supervisory staff in dissemination of information to all aquatics staff.
- Assist in the setup and oversight of events as needed.
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Three (3) to Four (4) Years of lifeguard experience.
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) required within 1 year of hire. CPR– First Aid certifications; Water Safety Instructor certification required to teach swim lessons. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT) certification preferred within 1 year of hire. Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) required within 1 year of hire.
- Experience lifeguarding at an outdoor pool and passing on skills test which consists of swimming 400 yards or meters, performing CPR, rescue breathing, conscious and unconscious choking.
- Aquatics Facility Operator and Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred.
Days/Hours: May include nights, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts.

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as City swimming pools practices with equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire and building safety regulations.
