Job description
This recruitment will be used to fill 12 part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Lifeguard position for Recreational Sports at Oregon State University (OSU).

The lifeguard will report to Head Lifeguard, Senior Aquatic Associate and the Aquatics Coordinator and is responsible for the daily assurance of a safe environment for the participants, programs, and staff. This position will also serve as a source of information for patrons with questions regarding pool program and hours of operation.

Anticipated Hourly Rate: $16.25
Position Duties
Position Details, Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Strictly adhere to all policies and regulations as outlined in the lifeguard manual
  • Follow all guidelines and procedures as directed by Aquatic Coordinator and adhere to expectations outlined by Aquatic Coordinator, Head Lifeguard, and Senior Aquatic Associate
  • Maintain all current certifications as directed in the employment contract
  • Fill out and file, as needed all appropriate paper and forms as they pertain to this position
  • Understand liability concepts and perform duties to eliminate possible questions of negligence
  • Understand basic water chemistry and how this relates to maintaining a positive aquatic environment
  • Read and understand all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on all chemicals and testing reagents
  • Be available during all requested or scheduled hours
  • Additional responsibilities may be included as deemed necessary by the Aquatic Coordinator
  • Maintain a clean and orderly station and perform desired tasks at hand with enthusiasm and good nature towards patrons and other staff
  • Become familiar with all department programs that may fall within the lifeguard’s scope of duty
  • Maintain constant surveillance of assigned zones following the 10/20 rule
  • Be aware of posture, alertness, and professionalism at all times and be reliable, motivated, and work well with minimum supervision
  • Wear the approved uniform to be identifiable to the swimming participants
  • Contribute to a positive environment for all participants by maintaining a helpful, courteous attitude
  • Spend time each week maintaining fitness level and practicing rescue skills
  • Recognize that prevention is the primary responsibility of a good lifeguard and develop work habits accordingly
  • Know and carefully follow the Emergency Action Plan for each facility
  • Fill out all report forms accurately and promptly
  • Monitor the lifeguard log, mailboxes, and personal email to keep abreast of facility news and changes
  • Actively participate in the substitution system on a regular basis
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • First Aid, CPR/AED for the Healthcare Provider, Lifeguard certification and DRS Bloodborne Pathogens certification is required before employment begins
  • It is mandatory that each employee attend annual department trainings, as well as completing all aquatic area in-service trainings
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Previous lifeguard experience a plus but not necessary
  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management
  • Appreciation of individual skills and diversity of patrons
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide a positive environment for patrons and other staff
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Period of Employment: One academic year (continuing employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a 30 day probationary period and satisfactory job performance as evaluated by immediate supervisor).

Compensation: Student employees are paid a wage consistent with the OSU Student Employment Pay Rate Guidelines. The Department of Recreational Sports identifies pay based upon job duties, level of responsibility and complexity of work to be performed.
