As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for supervision of the laboratory and research, mentoring of the chemical research team, and liaison with product management and engineers. WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (% of Time)

Managing projects: Assisting in establishing requirements for projects; liaison between product managers, engineers, and the chemical research team; tracking progress and establishing clear deliverables. (50%)

Mentoring: Lead a small team of chemists in developing new products and new test programs to continue to improve Simpson Strong-Tie’s position in the market. This will include developing test programs, which will shorten development time, and introducing the team to new technology to meet future needs of the building industry. (25%)

Manufacturing support: Provide assistance to manufacturing and quality. Assistance includes interpreting regulations, safety concerns with chemicals, process improvements, and quality control testing. (10%)

Customer support: Answer technical questions of a chemical nature coming from internal and external customers. (10%)

Industry organization involvement: Active participation in professional societies such as American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI). (5%)

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering required.
  • Advanced degree (MS, PhD, MBA) preferred.
  • 10 years of experience in research and development in:
    • Construction repair materials
    • Polymer development
    • Cure in place epoxy products
  • 5 years of experience managing projects.
  • 5 years of experience managing or mentoring others.
  • Leadership: Ability to set clear, meaningful, challenging and attainable goals.
  • Communication: Must be able to discuss technical issues at multiple levels. You will need to have detailed discussions with chemists; and be able to present information and test results to managers, engineers, and customers that may or may not have any chemical knowledge.
  • Chemical knowledge: Must have a firm grasp of organic chemistry and polymer chemistry.
  • Analytical skills: Chemical research at Simpson Strong-Tie involves the use of dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical testing, and many wet chemistry techniques. The ability to understand the strengths and weaknesses of these techniques is critical. Just as important is the ability to understand the statistical analysis of testing.
  • Desire to learn: The chemical research team at Simpson Strong-Tie currently develops products based on cement, waterborne latex, epoxy, vinyl ester, polyurethane, and methacrylate chemistries. Innovation is encouraged and there is no limitation to direction research can take.

This job requires 10% domestic travel.

Pay

$107300 - $144800 / year
