- Manage rail freight negotiations for multiple ADM commodity groups.
- Advance internal divisional goals through strategic negotiation and creative program / policy development with ADM’s railroad partners.
- Become a resource, advocate, and partner to internal stakeholders. Engage in frequent communication and gain in-depth understanding their evolving business strategy, markets, priorities, risks, challenges, competition, goals and objectives.
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with North American railroad partners.
- Develop an understanding and form an opinion of North American railroad priorities, risks, competition, operational health, threats and overall strategy - understand and communicate potential impacts on ADM’s business.
- Work in partnership with railroads to create ADM opportunities through mutual efficiency gains.
- Understand private and system railcar market and impacts on ADM freight execution and economics.
- Work closely with ADM Rail Logistics and Operations to understand and troubleshoot ever-changing railroad service levels.
- Understand government and legislative policy and its impact on transportation and trade of ADM commodities.
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of active rail freight contracts and tariffs. Understand and communicate expiration timing, competitive market forces, freight rates, active lanes, volumes, rolling stock ownership requirements and utilization, volume guarantees, rate history, railroad service performance levels, and alternate transportation options.
- Successfully and creatively negotiate rail freight contracts with ADM’s railroad partners that minimize risk, control costs, and advance ADM’s divisional goals.
- Constantly investigate alternative shipping strategies that allow the company to create leverage, reduce cost, and competitively access new markets.
- Understand and process rate requests from merchandisers, traders, and sales teams.
- Oversee publication of new rates and assist in troubleshoot downstream execution issues.
- Communicate transportation’s technology needs and assist in development of electronic tools with internal partners.
- Utilize knowledge gained from prior roles to further ADM’s rail transportation strategy.
- Provide leadership and guidance to Rail Freight Analysts.
- Awareness and input in ADM’s multi-modal transportation network strategy.
- Development of communication skills in the role of a strategic customer with North American railroad senior management.
- Gain broad knowledge of the transportation of ADM’s diverse products and traded commodities.
- Development of strategic negotiation skills.
- Negotiation of a portion of ADM’s multi-billion dollar rail spend
- Direct exposure to leadership both inside ADM Transportation and in multiple ADM business units.
- Gain understanding of railroad rate and service level impact on flow of ADM commodities.
- Development of leadership skills.
- University degree in agriculture or business (i.e. economics, finance, accounting)
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in trading / marketing of commodities or related food, feed and/or energy products transported by rail in North America
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered

- Proven ability to assess risk and exercise sound judgment in making decisions
- Demonstrated negotiation and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of domestic & international trade
- Proven ability to manage effectively within a team based work environment.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with end-users, suppliers, and internal customers
- Technologically competent, with demonstrated ability to learn and utilize technology solutions such as Power BI, Business Objects, Tableau, and Microsoft Office applications
