Description
Clackamas Community College (CCC) is an inclusive environment where the unique contributions of our diverse students, employees, and the community are honored and valued. We expect all employees to foster a climate of belonging that supports all students and employees in achieving success.
We see the application process as an opportunity to describe who we are as a department. We believe this process is as much an opportunity for you to learn about us as it is for us to learn about you. We think it's important that you know about our aspirations and the work we are doing to realize them. We certainly are in the midst of that journey and you would be an integral part of our progress. We'd like to bring in folks who identify with the direction we're heading. Thank you for taking the time to carefully consider this information and construct an application that shows how you might contribute as a member of the CCC Math Department.
The Math department resides in the Academic Foundations and Connections (AFaC) Division.
As a division, we:
- Understand the importance of collective decision-making and do so with a central goal in mind - students must come first
- Serve the entire college by offering students academic and personal support in addition to courses that are part of transfer and career technical education (CTE) degrees, certificates and programs, community education classes, developmental education, and training programs for business and industry
- Blend services (admissions through graduation), academics (including English, Math, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and Skills Development) and two departments that fulfill both (Athletics and Counseling)
- Strive for collaboration and intentionality in providing excellent curriculum and services to meet the needs of students
- Continuously engage our innovative spirit while utilizing a strategic approach to develop and implement processes, policies, classes, and infrastructures that enhance the student experience
About the CCC Math Department
As instructors, we:
- Understand the importance of life-long learning as a fundamental goal of higher education and provide intentional opportunities for students to reflect on their progress and growth as learners
- Seek to implement student-centered teaching and learning models and encourage students' authority in the learning process
- Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to support students who are in CTE, Statistics, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Pathways
- Embrace quantitative literacy, numeracy, statistical and probabilistic ways of thinking and making decisions
- Prioritize low-cost materials, either curated or developed, both to save students money and to expand what learning looks like without traditional textbooks
- Design and teach across our coherent and deliberate pathways that:
- employ motivating learning materials, consistent types of assignments, and clear grading approaches so that students can understand expectations and feel confident in their engagement
- provide many opportunities for student-to-student and student-to-instructor communication, and
- acknowledge students' lives outside their math class
- Utilize projects, portfolios, and writing assignments to assess student learning, rather than relying solely on testing
- Collaborate to create our own learning materials and in-class activities, often through grant-funded projects and initiatives
- Believe that outcomes assessment can help us make informed changes to our teaching practices and our curricula
- View "the classroom" as encompassing all learning experiences, whether they are in-person or run partially or fully remotely
As department members, we:
- Recognize that we are individual people with individual perspectives and strengths
- Value conversation, intentionally creating opportunities for conversations about teaching and learning.
- Value collaborative decision making and supportive collegiality, while also encouraging and supporting the pursuit of innovative projects by small teams
- Are improving our ability to organize around common goals, so that innovation is well communicated, its value is well understood, and it is supported by appropriate resources
- Seek out grants and professional development opportunities that can improve our teaching and student learning
- Make a strong effort to be flexible with our schedules, teaching locations, and teaching modalities
Across the college, we:
- Have developed an innovative approach to course placement that honors students' learning experiences and positions math faculty as stakeholders in that process
- Support a thriving, peer-oriented, learner-focused math tutoring program
- Engage with student services, academic and career-tech departments, administration, and the Board of Education to help them understand the ways that math classes are changing at CCC and how this impacts our shared goal of serving students. We are generally regarded as a service department that cares about whether our math courses are helping students succeed in their programs
- Work to understand and implement the College's broader strategic priorities
- Are incredibly passionate about our College, colleagues, and students
